The Hexologists
The Hexologists | Josiah Bancroft
4 posts | 4 read | 1 reading | 7 to read
The first book in a wildly entertaining new fantasy series from acclaimed author Josiah Bancroft where a married couple team up to solve magical, and often quite odd, mysteries. The Hexologists, Iz and Warren Wilby, are quite accustomed to helping desperate clients with the bugbears of city life. Aided by hexes and a bag of charmed relics, the Wilbies have recovered children abducted by chimney-wraiths, removed infestations of barb-nosed incubi, and ventured into the Gray Plains of the Unmade to soothe a troubled ghost. Well-acquainted with the weird, they never shy away from a challenging case. But when they are approached by the royal secretary and told the king pleads to be baked into a cake--going so far as to wedge himself inside a lit oven--the Wilbies soon find themselves embroiled in a mystery that could very well see the nation turned on its head. Their effort to expose a royal secret buried under forty years of lies brings them nose to nose with a violent antiroyalist gang, avaricious ghouls, alchemists who draw their power from a hell-like dimension, and a bookish dragon who only occasionally eats people. Armed with a love toughened by adversity and a stick of chalk that can conjure light from the darkness, hope from the hopeless, Iz and Warren Wilby are ready for whatever springs from the alleys, graves, and shadows next.

Pickpick

5 ⭐️s
Bancroft's books of Babel were good; The Hexologists blow those books out of the water.
The world was a bit difficult to orient to, but once you're in, you're in. The characters were my favorite part; round and unique in every way. A talking dragon in a “portalmanteau“? Sign me the heck up. The creative world-building is incomparable to any other contemporary author I have read. This will easily make it into my top 5 books of the year.

GondorGirl Ooo this one sounds really good! 12mo

What drew me to this book was the main mystery… why would the king want to bake himself in a cake? To go as far as getting into a lit oven!

So good! Good creatures. Creative world. Dragon. Several stories in one as they solve multiple mysteries/problems. I loved Iz & Warren, very believable. Pleasantly imaginative cozy fantasy. Great dialogue!

If you liked Books of Babel, read this! Can‘t wait for book 2!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

EDIT - #31by31 … 32/31

I had to post this because I have had a Goodreads since approx 2012, updated constantly, and I have entered hundreds of giveaways! I have NEVER, EVER won😂, but today I got a book that I'm actually really looking forward to! I enjoyed the Tower of Babel series by this author and this one seems right up my alley 🤓
