For Blood and Money: Billionaires, Biotech, and the Quest for a Blockbuster Drug
For Blood and Money: Billionaires, Biotech, and the Quest for a Blockbuster Drug | Nathan Vardi
4 posts | 1 read
A gripping business narrative and scientific thriller about what it takes to bring a wonder drug to marketand save countless lives. For Blood and Money tells the little-known story of how an upstart biotechnology company created a one-in-a-million cancer drug, and how the core teamdenied their share of the profitswent and did it again. In this epic saga of money and science, veteran financial journalist Nathan Vardi explains how the invention of two of the biggest cancer drugs in history became (for their backers) two of the greatest Wall Street bets of all time. In the multibillion-dollar business of biotech, where pharmaceutical companies, the government, hedge funds, and venture capitalists have spent billions on funding, experimentation, and treatments, a single molecule can stop cancer in its tracksand make the people who find that rare molecule astonishingly rich. For Blood and Money follows a small team at a biotech start-up in California, who have found one of these rare molecules. Their compound, known as a BTK inhibitor, seems to work on a vicious type of leukemia. When patients start rising from their hospice beds, the team knows theyre onto something big. What follows is a story of genius, pathos, and drama, in which vivid characters navigate a world of corporate intrigue and ambiguous morality. Vardis narrative immerses readers in the recent explosion of biotech start-ups. He describes the scientists, doctors, and investors who are risking everything to develop new, life-saving treatments, and introduces suffering patients for whom the stakes are life-or-death. A gripping nonfiction read, For Blood and Money illustrates why its so hard to bring new drugs to market, explains why they are so expensive, and examines how profit-driven venture capitalists are shaping the future of medicine.

Just a few to finish my review catch up. Still having off times but maybe having some easier hours. 🤞🏻💜

Tagged is a rec from @Cinfhen 🇮🇱💙. The author explores the development of drugs for chronic leukemia. Well done and interesting.
I liked Milk but don‘t remember much 2 weeks out.
Dish looks at a restaurant dish featuring each component farm to table. Fascinating.
Mystique: Parker Posey is one of the worst narrators I‘ve ever had! ⬇️

Megabooks A reviewer on audible called Mystique dated. 🤣🤣 Duh. I‘ve never read some much about female orgasms! I guess it was interesting, but I wouldn‘t tell anyone to run out and buy it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ especially not the audiobook! 🙅🏻‍♀️ #roll100 @PuddleJumper (edited) 13mo
BarbaraBB I bailed on Milk… had no idea you were reading it too! 13mo
Centique I hope your health improves Meg and you get more and more good days 💕💕 13mo

squirrelbrain I feel the same about Milk; looking back now it seems a bit ‘samey‘ and all rather a blur. 13mo
Reggie You take that back about Parker Posey! She is an American treasure! Lol that‘s too bad. She‘s one of my favorite actresses. Have you ever seen House of Yes or Broken English? I love her. 13mo
Megabooks @Reggie I love her, too!! That‘s why I bought the audiobook!! I can‘t remember all the ones I‘ve seen, but I thought she was so hilarious in Best in Show. Anyway, girl cannot narrate and audiobook to save her life!! Flat and lifeless. Nothing like her acting. 13mo
Suet624 @Reggie 💕💕💕Parker! 💕💕💕 13mo

I admit I only really grasped 40% of the scientific and financial aspects of this book….however, I still found the premise fascinating and a real page turner. It‘s shocking to read all the antics, (lack of) ethics, principles and decisions that go into funding, producing and acquiring drugs/ medicines to bring to market. Super disheartening to see who gets rich from these drugs.

Cinfhen I think you‘d like this one @Megabooks 14mo
Megabooks Just got it with a credit! Thanks! 14mo
