The Girls of Summer
The Girls of Summer: A Novel | Katie Bishop
10 posts | 12 read | 7 to read
"A lyrical, emotional novel...Reminiscent of HBOs hit The White Lotus, Bishop's tale will draw readers in with its realistic descriptions of the island. The obvious read-alike is My Dark Vanessa, and the plot-driven tension will appeal to fans of psychological suspense." Booklist (starred review) Rachel has been in love with Alistair for fifteen years. Even though shes now married to someone else. Even though she was a teenager when they met. Even though he is twenty years older than her. Rachel and Alistairs summer love affair on a remote, sun-trapped Greek island has consumed her since she was seventeen, obliterating everything in its wake. But as Rachel becomes increasingly obsessed with reliving the events of so long ago, she reconnects with the other girls who were similarly drawn to life on the island, where the nights were long, the alcohol was free-flowing and everyone acted in ways they never would at home. And as she does so, dark and deeply suppressed secrets about her first love affair begin to rise to the surface, as well as the truth about her time working for an enigmatic and wealthy man, who controlled so much more than she could have ever realized. Joining a post #MeToo discourse, The Girls of Summer grapples with themes of power, sex, and consent, as it explores the complicated nature of memory and traumaand what it takes to reframe, and reclaim, your own story.

Sometimes romanticizing difficult parts of our past is how we cope and Rachel has been doing that for the past 15 years. On a trip back to Greece with her husband her past and future collide and she is forced to see things for what they actually were. The book showed how easily young teens can be manipulated and coerced into unfortunate situations. The narration was great.

This was a little too Jeffrey Epstein for my taste. But it's good. People should be aware that these types of things happen sometimes to young girls.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘m a sucker for a reflective novel like this, where the protagonist is looking back at formative experiences through an adult lens and reckoning with the reverberations years later. This one had its merits, but wasn‘t my favorite. It was relatively predictable and I didn‘t feel much of an emotional connection to the characters. 🎧

JamieArc I agree. This one didn‘t quite live up to my expectations, though I still enjoyed it. 1y
ICantImReading @JamieArc I‘m glad I‘m not alone! I hope your next read is a great one 🙂 1y

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫 by 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 is a powerful story of awakening, reconciliation, forgiveness, & healing to move forward by a woman who doesn't realize she was a victim of sexual abuse until forced to. It's a compelling exploration of the insidious power of trauma, & the psyche's ability to shield us from pain. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Told in “then” and “now” segments, Rachel‘s life has largely been defined by the early gap year she took on a small Grecian island. When she returns 16 years later with her husband, the memories of that summer draw her back. But the first love story that this seems to be soon turns into something much darker and a lot less innocent. A discussion starter for sure, Bishop‘s debut makes for an engrossing read from start to finish!

This is not the read I was expecting for a debut effort. Not only does this author have a way with words, but she has also penned a very gripping suspense read. I was totally sucked in from beginning to end. Solid summer read. #bookspin #bookspinbingo #doublespin @TheAromaofBooks

Today was a slower reading day, thanks to Netflix releasing new seasons for 3 of my favourite shows in one week! 😂

Three comics and one #NetGalley audiobook. 🤍

#20in4

Andrew65 Well done on all you did fit in. 👏👏👏 (edited) 1y
janeycanuck Yeah, but what are the shows?! 1y
Clwojick @janeycanuck I basically only watch true crime or trashy reality tv 😂 Queer Eye 🧡 Selling Sunset, and The Ultimatum ❤️‍🩹 1y
janeycanuck @Clwojick Nothing wrong with that! I haven‘t started this season of Queer Eye yet cause I know I‘ll just become a bump on a log and binge it non-stop but I‘m looking forward to it! I haven‘t heard of the Ultimatum, I‘ll have to look for it. 1y

We just finished this doozy of a suspense novel. 😍🤯 If you need an escape this summer, pick up this book! Set in the Greek islands, Rachel recounts her memories of a nostalgic summer... But can our minds really be trusted to remember things correctly? Full review is in bio!

Thanks to St. Martin's Press for this ARC 💛
