Self - Actualization

"In the conservative ideologies of the rich & powerful, the principle of control is much more comfortable than is trust and support for self-organization. An ideology of control justifies intervention by those forces of containment, such as military and police, to maintain order and protect the structures of power and wealth. On the contrary, allowing an increase in the self-organization of processes might bring about more beneficial solutions ⬇ï¸

Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja It's interesting to read Kriz's insights into how personal psychology mirrors political and social psychology (and vice versa). The people who most need therapy are often those least likely to recognise they would benefit from it (and the rest of us alongside them). 3mo

Wow! 🤯 The chapter on Chaos and Order had so many incredible concepts to get my head around!
While it's about therapy, the section on the perceptual construction of order out of chaos which seeks to ignore experiences threatening to that construct put me in mind of PKD's explorations of fracturing reality. Another on the need of life to inject chaos into order to prevent stagnation reminded me of Frank Herbert's Golden Path in the Dune series.

My last few counselling books have been issue specific, so I thought my next one should be on fundamental theory.
While I'm familiar with Carl Rogers' development of self-actualisation within the person-centred approach, I've a looser grasp on systems theory. Kriz mentions the work of Ilia Prigogine, whose name I at least recognise from one of Fritjof Capra's books ("The Web of Life" seems likely) so I'm hoping this won't go too much over my head!

I attended a conference last week: Putting the Politics (Back) in Counselling: and as usual ended up ordering books. The conference topics were on developing awareness of the socio-political causes of psychological distress, decolonising therapy, and the existential threat caused by climate change. It was a fantastic day, which I was going to attend in person but they switched it to Zoom, so less immediate but also less hassle. ⬇ï¸

Bookwomble Holding the Hope has contributions from several of the conference speakers, the topic of climate change being one I'm seeing more of in my work. Therapies for Survivors of Torture is also, sadly, relevant as there's a relatively large asylum-seeker population in the locality where I work. Self-Actualization is a more generally applicable book, one to deepen my knowledge.
Now all I have to do is read them!

The_Book_Ninja Navigating the world right now is so stressful. 12mo
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja Yep, it can be pretty freaky. 12mo
Aimeesue I hesitate to say they sound like great reads. I guess “important and unfortunately timely†is more appropriate. Hope you find them valuable. 12mo
Bookwomble @Aimeesue I'm looking forward to reading them all 🙂 12mo
