The Long Game
The Long Game: A Novel | Elena Armas
11 posts | 13 read | 2 to read
A disgraced soccer exec reluctantly enlists the help of a retired soccer star in coaching a childrens team in this smalltown love story in the vein of Ted Lasso and It Happened One Summer from the New York Times bestselling author of The Spanish Love Deception. Adalyn Reyes has spent years perfecting her daily routine: wake up at dawn, drive to the Miami Flames FC offices, try her hardest to leave a mark, go home, and repeat. But her routine is disrupted when a video of her in an altercation with the teams mascot goes viral. Rather than fire her, the teams ownerwho happens to be her fathersends Adalyn to middle-of-nowhere North Carolina, where shes tasked with turning around the struggling local soccer team, the Green Warriors, as a way to redeem herself. Her plans crumble upon discovering that the players wear tutus to practice (impractical), keep pet goats (messy), and are terrified of Adalyn (counterproductive), and are nine-year-old kids. To make things worse, also in town is Cameron Caldani, goalkeeping prodigy whose presence is somewhat of a mystery. Cam is the perfect candidate to help Adalyn, but after one very unfortunate first encounter involving a rooster, Cams leg, and Adalyns bumper, hes also set on running her out of town. But banishment is not an option for Adalyn. Not again. Helping this ragtag childrens team is her road to redemption, and she is playing the long game. With or without Cams help.

This started slow for me but picked up and I was loving it by the end. A (retired?) soccer star with serious Roy Kent vibes is hiding out in a small town finds himself stuck with a disgraced marketing executive as they work with a U10 girls soccer team and shenanigans ensue. Great banter, thoughtful back stories and cats and goats (oh my!) make for a charming read. #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

Kristy_K Omg yes, definitely Roy Kent vibes! 6mo

I‘m not always the biggest fan of a slow burn romance, but this was done really well in my opinion! Loved both the main characters and side characters.

Charming small town atmosphere, comical moments, nice level of angst without unnecessary drama by a third party, raw characters, slow burn romance, delicious spice, swoon-worthy love declarations backed up with actions, a nice 'third break up' act without a real break up.
The reasons to recommend this book are endless.
This was the first book I've read by the author but surely will not be the last.

After binging through Ted Lasso TV series a few weeks ago, this football (soccer) themed romance seemed to be a nice light choice and I was not disappointed. I particularly enjoyed the characters on the young girls team and the common sense wisdom they showed. The romance was of course predictable, but still fun and there was some spice near the end of the book. Thanks to Edelweiss+ for the digital advance reading copy. 3.75/5 stars

Such a pity this small town romance in the middle of nowhere is so far from the goodness of “Spanish Deception“...
There were a few occasional laughs and smiles but the rest was kind of boring. The storyline and the development of the relationship even difficulties they endured wasn't even convincing.
It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either :)

We love the dedication of this one 💕”For all the girls who might have lost it once or twice, so what? Let those beautiful feelings rain on them, babe.”

Fun fact: we‘re the only place in the world to get hardcover editions of certain romance titles 😎

This summer, I've been embracing the "day off beach life" mentality, and this past Thursday I read over half of The Long Game before I packed up to go home.

I finished it yesterday, and y'all... Cameron is my new book boyfriend. That is all.
