An immortal Knight of the Round Table faces his greatest challenge yet--saving the politically polarized, rapidly warming world from itself--in this slyly funny contemporary take on Arthurian legend. "A brilliant collision of ancient mysticism with modern madness."--Robert Jackson Bennett, bestselling author of the Founders Trilogy Legends don't always live up to reality. Being reborn as an immortal defender of the realm gets awfully tiring over the years--or at least that's what Sir Kay's thinking as he claws his way up from beneath the earth yet again. Kay once rode alongside his brother, King Arthur, as a Knight of the Round Table. Since then, he has fought at Hastings and at Waterloo and in both World Wars. But now he finds himself in a strange new world where oceans have risen, the army's been privatized, and half of Britain's been sold to foreign powers. The dragon that's running amok--that he can handle. The rest? He's not so sure. Mariam's spent her life fighting what's wrong with her country. But she's just one ordinary person, up against a hopelessly broken system. So when she meets Kay, she dares to hope that the world has finally found the savior it needs. Yet as the two travel through this bizarre and dangerous land, they discover that a magical plot of apocalyptic proportions is underway. And Kay's too busy hunting dragons--and exchanging blows with his old enemy Lancelot--to figure out what to do about it. In perilous times like these, the realm doesn't just need a knight. It needs a true leader. Luckily, Excalibur lies within reach. But who will be fit to wield it? With a cast that includes Merlin, Morgan le Fay, the Lady of the Lake, and King Arthur himself--all reimagined in joyous, wickedly subversive fashion--Perilous Times is an Arthurian retelling that looks forward as much as it looks back . . . and a rollicking, deadpan-funny, surprisingly touching fantasy adventure.

My local indie bookstore/game shop has a summer reading challenge and it's has motivated me to actually read the books I buy. 😅

My goal is to complete the whole bingo card, and I have until the end of August.
I've got ten physical books, one audiobook, and one book on kindle left to read.
It's been fun discovering new books and finally reading the books I already have.

Currently reading: Perilous Times(15), Ninefox Gambit(25), Stardust(17)

?Perilous Times = Dystopian UF with the knights of the Round Table having to rescue Britain from peril [ARC (meanwhile published)]

?The Good, The Bad and The History = 14th Chronicles of St Mary's book, read the ARC, am now listening to the audiobook

My May Goldsboro book arrived and it's absolutely glorious! 😍📚💕 Plus, I didn't realize that it's like a modern day story featuring King Arthur's knights and now I'm even more excited to read it! #goldsboro #goldsborobooks

Arthur‘s knights of the round table are called back from their slumber when Britain is in need. This time, Kay wakes to find an island in the grips of a climate crisis and does what he can to help. But he‘s not the only one who is back….

A really good fantasy book that‘s filled with humour but deals with a very real issue too. I was hooked by this and thought the premise was just brilliant.

Recommended!

I wrestled and struggled with this historical fiction fantasy. The premise was promising. The Knights of the Round Table were given immortality by Merlin and live under their own tree to be brought back when Britain is in peril. The peril here is global warming, but there are mentions of others throughout history. While the knights and their contemporaries are essential characters, Mariam, a young rebel fighting against power mongers, really 🔻

robinb leads the charge. My main issues with this book were its length (500 pages, needed lots of editing) and its over abundance of preachiness. There were boring stretches throughout rehashing plot points ad nauseam. And while I know global warming is a real and viable concern, this storyline became tiresome as it was saturated in endless platitudes and political motivations. I actually considered DNF because I felt battered and weary. 🔻 2y
robinb Those who love Arthurian legend will probably enjoy this (although the characters are very different in some cases), and it is well written, but it just wasn‘t for me. 2.5/5⭐️ 2y
