The Winter Knight
The Winter Knight | Jes Battis
5 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
A queer, modern Arthurian tale set in contemporary Vancouver. An autistic college student who is the latest reincarnation of Sir Gawain is drawn deeper and deeper into the family secrets and round table feuds he's spent his life trying to avoid while a Valkyrie tries to figure out who is murdering knights before the body count climbs.

This book is utterly unique. It reads almost like an epic poem of old, but at the same time, completely new. Medieval-Modern, knights for the new age. It examines the mythology of Camelot through the lens of today‘s world, with all its complexities and difficulties and joys, where even the setting feels queer and off-kilter. ⬇️

BookBr A tad slow-moving, perhaps, but an engrossing tale of self-discovery, power, and loss — but also a tale of finding. It‘s difficult to describe, clearly, but an excellent read. 2w

I finally got some outdoor reading time today, but then a hailstorm moved in. Blah.

THE WINTER KNIGHT is the last Canada Reads Longlist title in my queue. Arthurian stuff is a hard sell for me, but I think I might love this one. It‘s all character work and everyday mythology and Vancouver, with great vibes. Not at all the “epic poetry, but make it EDGY (sans actual epic poetry)” feel I somehow expected from it. #gaymay

peanutnine I love that mug! 8mo
xicanti @peanutnine it‘s my favourite! The design is by Coast Salish artist Simone Diamond. I have it as a snack bowl and a plate, too. 8mo

Myths can be rewritten. As Wayne learns when a mysterious force begins killing off modern knights. He must work with a Valkyrie, a monster, and a rune smith to stop it.

This was a really interesting twist on Arthurian legend! Urban fantasy & a diverse cast, which I loved. Really loose world building, a too quick romance, & pacing that was all over the place, which I enjoyed less. But once I got to the last 1/4 I was in! 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

This was by no means a poorly written book, but I just never got invested in it fully. I think I was comparing it too much to Legendborn, so it's my own fault. Good use of #Arthuriana, but not a lot of action, so if you're more into character exploration, you might fare better than I did. #fantasy #urbanfantasy #retelling
