Scenes of the Crime
Scenes of the Crime: A Novel | Jilly Gagnon
10 posts | 9 read | 2 to read
An ambitious screenwriter tries to solve her friends disappearance by re-creating their fateful final girls trip in this riveting locked-room mystery from the author of All Dressed Up. It should have been the perfect spring break: Five girlfriends. A remote winery on the Oregon coast. An infinite supply of delicious wine at their manicured fingertips. But then their centerbeautiful, magnetic Vanessa Moralesvanished without a trace. Emily Fischer was perhaps the last person to see her alive. But now, years later, Emily spots Vanessas doppelganger at a local caf. At the end of her rope working a lucrative yet mind-numbing gig on a network sitcom, Emily is inspired to finally tell the story thats been percolating inside her for so long: Vanessas story. But first, she needs to know what really happened on that fateful night. So she puts a brilliant scheme into motion. She gets the girls together for a reunion weekend at the scene of the crime under the guise of reconnecting. Theres Brittany, Vanessas cousin and the inheritor of the winery; Paige, a former athlete, bullish yet easily manipulated; and Lydia, the wallflower of the group. One of them knows the truth. But what have they each been hiding? And how much can Emily trust anything she learns from them . . . or even her own memories of Vanessas last days? Suspenseful, propulsive, and interspersed with scenes from Emilys blockbuster screenplay, Scenes of the Crime is an unforgettable mystery that examines culpability, the shiny rearview mirror of Hollywood storytelling, and the pitfalls of female friendship.

I do not care what happened to Vanessa and I especially do not care to spend any more time with Emily, Brittany, Paige, and Lydia. I'm halfway in and not only is the story of Vanessa's disappearance 15 years ago uncompelling but the remaining frenemies are all annoying and unsympathetic. Back to the library! Next...

Toxic college friends turn into petty adult acquaintances when they reunite 15 years later after the disappearance of their friend, Vanessa. Soon mysterious things start happening as the truth about what happened all those years ago unravels.

While the plot itself was enough to make me keep reading, the constant bickering & pettiness grated on me. I also felt let down by the ending.

I wasn‘t a fan of the chapters that were told in script form.

This book was absolutely full of toxic friendships but it made for a great story and a great mystery. This novel was filled with twists and turns and I couldn‘t get enough. I really liked it!

Meh. I finished it because I wanted to know the ending. Four friends return 15 years after their friend‘s disappearance to reminisce. Their fifth friend disappeared one day and all of them think they had something to do with her disappearance/death. Im not sure how the four of them didn‘t put the pieces together in 15 years. While it is a good plot line. Im not a fan of the conclusion or the ties that got the characters there. #OUABC #Scarathlon

Yea, toxic “friends” getting together 15 years later to determine how a gravitation pull friend disappears is not my type of book. Finished it simply because it‘s a #ouabc choice. I couldn‘t get into the four ladies. With their posh life and wine obsession. With how they always went out of the way to put each other down. I know the end wraps it up nice, yet couldn‘t feel for any of them. No wonder Vanessa was a mystery to those that “knew” her

#OUABC - September 2023 Adult Box • 4 Stars

This locked-room mystery follows a screenwriter who tries to solve her friend‘s disappearance by re-creating their fateful final girls‘ trip. The novel is set at a remote winery on the Oregon coast, where fifteen years earlier, five college friends threw a booze-fueled party. After an argument, one of them - the vibrant Vanessa - went missing and was presumed dead. ⬇️

suvata ⬆️ Suspenseful and interspersed with scenes from a blockbuster screenplay (clever and unique presentation of the past storyline). Scenes of the Crime is an unforgettable mystery that captures the essence of Hollywood storytelling, and the pitfalls of toxic female friendships. 13mo

#ouabc October book box: murder she wrote.
Screenwriter attempts to solve a friend‘s death 15 year prior by recreating it all at the scene of the crime. Interesting premise, but I‘m not hyped right now for it. I‘m picky on my mystery books, as I like having actual detectives there. If nothing else, excited to have 4 gifts in the box. That‘s a decently good sign.

Roary47 It looks like a good one. 14mo

Set in an OR winery on a cliffside, screenwriter Emily reconnects with the college friends she was once close to- until one disappeared. Looking to revitalize her career, Emily hopes rehashing the past will inspire her to write a blockbuster. With screenwriting interludes, this breaks up the story & adds layers leaving the reader doubting the truth. The friendships here are anything but—but the wine drinking pairs nicely with a glass of your own!

I really wanted to like this one more. Good writing, but I had character and layout format issues with it. 3/5⭐️

My review is rather long, but if you‘re interested, here‘s my GR link:

Another wild one! A girlfriends trip 15 years ago turned deadly when Vanessa falls to her death and is taken out to sea at the fancy winery where they‘ve all gathered. Now producer Emily is writing a screenplay loosely based on these events. But of course nothing is as it seems and the novel alternates in time as the true story is revealed. Friendships, secrets, lies, jealousies…you get the picture!
