A female John Wick story with dragon magic set in contemporary San Franciscos Chinatown Emiko Soong belongs to one of the eight premier magical families of the world. But Emiko never needed any magic. Because she is the Blade of the Soong Clan. Or was. Until shes drenched in blood in the middle of a market in China, surrounded by bodies and the scent of blood and human waste as a lethal perfume. The Butcher of Beijing now lives a quiet life in San Francisco, importing antiques. But when a shinigami, a god of death itself, calls in a family blood debt, Emiko must recover the Ebony Gate that holds back the hungry ghosts of the Yomi underworld. Or forfeit her soul as the anchor. What's a retired assassin to do but save the City By The Bay from an army of the dead? So I accidentally was reading 2 Asian fantasy books, set in San Francisco. One on audio, one ebook. I did get some things confused at first and had to think about which book I was reading.

All that to say, I really loved book! I really hope there are more. A female John wick like character with magic! Emiko was the Blade, known as the butcher of Beijing. It becomes too much for her so she quits and moves for SF.

I really hope for a sequel!

Collaborative writing, particularly of fiction is a difficult challenge. Even though the author blurb indicates these authors “have written together since middle school” their early pages don‘t offer a seamless single voice. Luckily, this eases as the novel progresses.

Emiko Soong, formally the Blade of her family, is now in San Francisco where she is tasked with the retrieval of a gate that controls access to hell. Exciting; 1st in a series.

julesG Oh, you noticed those first pages, too. I thought it was only me. 1y

It came up in a 'what to read next' questionnaire on Tor.com and the short intro of Asian mythology meets John Wick & Ghostbusters sounded like made for me. 🐲🥢🗡️🍶👻

It was a good read. Fast paced. Likable characters.

Some of the tropes reminded me of YA Fantasy (chosen one with hidden talents). The writing could have benefited from more editing (repetitions of details and phrases).

Solid start to an interesting new Urban Fantasy series.

TieDyeDude I read that John Wick/Ghostbusters comparison too, which piqued my interest. Good to know it is worth a read! 1y
