Rosewater: The Debut Novel from Liv Little | Liv Little
4 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
A deliciously gritty and strikingly bold debut novel about discovering love where it has always been. Elsie is a sexy, funny, and fiercely independent woman in South London. But, at just 28, she is also tired. Though she spends her days writing tender poetry in her journal, her nights are spent working long hours for minimum wage at a neighbourhood gay bar. The difficulty of being estranged from her family, struggle of being continually rejected from jobs, and fear of never making money doing what she loves, is too great. But Elsie is determined to keep the faith, for a little longer at least. Things will surely turn around. They have to. As she tries to breathe through the panic attacks, sleeping with her hot and spirited co-worker Bea isn't exactly straightforward and offers Elsie just another place to hide. As Elsie tries to reconnect with her best friend Juliet, her fragile world spirals out of control. Can Elsie steady herself and not fall through the cracks?

MicheleinPhilly @squirrelbrain We did! 🎉 I‘m liking but not loving it. I think I‘m just getting too old to enjoy these “angsty 20-somethings communicate badly” novels. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y
squirrelbrain Yes, that‘s exactly what it is! I read this one not long after, which was fabulous. 1y

Pickpick

I couldn‘t review this before, as I knew it hadn‘t made the #camplitsy23 shortlist but you lot didn‘t! 🤣

When I was in London I chatted to 3 booksellers - the first didn‘t rate it at all, and thought it needed editing, the second thought it was the best book ever about the queer, black experience and the third thought it was a ‘nice‘ romance.

I tend to agree with the third - it felt like a typical millennial love story. ⬇️

squirrelbrain There was nothing ground-breaking in it, whereas it has been marketed as something new and exciting. To me, the MC‘s best friend was a far more interesting character than the MC and I‘d rather have read about her. I‘m glad, therefore that it didn‘t make camp. I liked it, but not much to discuss. 2y
TrishB Won‘t be rushing for it- but I love the cover. 2y
BarbaraBB That is a bit of a bummer. I expected much more! 2y
sarahbarnes Great review. Agree with @BarbaraBB that I had higher hopes for this one! 2y
squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes - I had high hopes too; I nominated it for camp! It‘s a perfectly good book, but a bit millennial for me. 2y

Mehso-so

Great potential with a BIPOC protagonist who is a struggling poet in London and trying to navigate through her queer relationships but the writing style is a bit disjointed and even the second half could be fleshed out more. Overall, meh.
