Orla OReilly, the youngest in a long line of hedge witches, is compelled to return home after the death of her grandmother, Mamo. In the wake of her Mamos passing, seas are impossible to fish, crops have soured, even Jo Manalos attic is taken over by a poltergeist! And to make matter worse it appears that the cause is Mamo, or her mislaid bones that is. Can Orla shoulder the responsibility of quieting her Mamos spirit, saving her hometown, and will she have to step up as the new witch of Haresden like Mamo always wanted? Collects Mamo #1-5.

Something about this witchy sapphic graphic novel didn't work for me in execution despite the interesting concepts (two young women try to fix the magic that is out of wack in their town and discover it was caused by one of their grandmother's sinister plot beyond the grave) and beautiful art. Too much exposition and not enough action? I'm surprised this won the Lambda award for graphic novels this year.

Johanna414 I was also a little underwhelmed by this one... 2y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @Johanna414 glad it's not just me! 2y
Kenyazero It‘s definitely a fun and beautiful read, but I agree it feels a little off somehow. 1y

Pickpick

Coming into one‘s own empowerment is the underlying theme in this quiet, sapphic comic from Australian cartoonist Sas Milledge. Beautiful art and minimal text. #LGBTQ #YA #GraphicNovel

The opening page establishes setting and introduces us to one of the main characters, Jo. She has a serious /concerned / determined look on her face. Much of the character development is in visual text in this graphic novel, rather than in the word text.

psalva @Lindy I really loved the art in this- I feel like I need to practice reading the image for character details. It‘s a language I don‘t always pick up on :) 2y
Lindy @psalva It‘s true: it‘s a skill that takes practice. 2y

First, I must say that the art in this was wonderful. I love how the colors and movements of nature were depicted. Also, the art really highlighted the ways in which nature interacts with the characters.
That said, the story didn‘t blow me away. I would have liked more definition in the character development. ⬇️

psalva A lot of the backstory for Orla, for example, was hinted at but not fully explained. I do acknowledge that perhaps the style of storytelling just wasn‘t for me on that front. I will say, the relationship between Orla and Jo was really cute, and of course Sìth, the cat familiar, was a highlight. 2y
