The Santa List

I don‘t have any Christmas socks, alas and I get pretty tired of Christmas music by December 2 (thank goodness I don‘t work in retail, I‘d probably go mad). But, I do have a soft spot for this charity single “Do they know it‘s Christmas?” by Band Aid, despite its atrocious lyrics. I was 19 in 1984 and this effort to bring light on people suffering and how I could help made a great impression on me. When I hear this song, it‘s like a Time Machine.

Bookwomble I did work in retail for over a decade, luckily for much of that time having discretion about what Christmas music was played, so developed a store-friendly but somewhat diverse playlist. When I left my intention was to never play those songs again, but it was too late: I need those songs to feel Christmassy! 🎅🎶🎄😄 2y

mandarchy I am not a fan of Christmas, and most of the music drives me crazy. I could never work in retail. I do have a handful of songs that I do love. This is on the list. I was only 15 in 84. I love the question, do they know it's Christmas? There is so much pressure to participate that we can't imagine there are places that don't. 2y

CarolynM I did working retail a few Christmases when I was a teenager. The Christmas music torture is real🥴🥴🥴 You‘re right about this one being a time capsule, and also about some of the lyrics, but at least it‘s trying to draw attention to the problem unlike the atrociously self congrulatory We Are The World🤢 (edited) 2y
