"I read everything Ivy Pochoda writes. Her capture of the complexities, diversities, and insanities of today's life and culture is next to none. I loved Sing Her Down. The world will too." --Michael Connelly, author of Desert Star No Country for Old Men meets Killing Eve in this gritty, feminist Western thriller from the award-winning author of These Women. Florence Florida Baum is not the hapless innocent she claims to be when she arrives at the Arizona women's prison--or so her ex-cellmate, Diosmary Sandoval, keeps insinuating. Dios knows the truth about Florida's crimes, understands the truth that Florence hides even from herself: that she wasn't a victim of circumstance, an unlucky bystander misled by a bad man. Dios knows that darkness lives in women too, despite the world's refusal to see it. And she is determined to open Florida's eyes and unleash her true self. When an unexpected reprieve gives both women their freedom, Dios's fixation on Florida turns into a dangerous obsession, and a deadly cat-and-mouse chase ensues from Arizona to the desolate streets of Los Angeles. With blistering, incisive prose, the award-winning author Ivy Pochoda delivers a razor-sharp Western. Gripping and immersive, Sing Her Down is a spellbinding thriller setting two indelible women on a path to certain destruction and an epic, stunning showdown.

Yet another example of a book from this list that could have been great. I loved the gritty, Western tone; it felt original. Also, focusing on two women recently released from prison was a great premise.

Sadly, though, another book falls short due to poor execution in the end. The book starts strong, then the storyline tries to be too complex and ultimately collapses on itself.

I would read this author again, though.

Ruthiella I‘ve long meant to read her books, but I think I will start with the one that was chosen for Dennis Lahane‘s imprint back in the day. 11mo

squirrelbrain That‘s the second so-so review I‘ve seen for this - plus it‘s not out for a few months yet over here. 11mo
Hooked_on_books Yeah, I felt the same way. Great premise, lots of potential, but too bad it didn‘t deliver. 11mo
Chelsea.Poole I agree! Such promise but didn‘t live up to the potential. 11mo
Megabooks I listened to a bit of the audio and wasn‘t sold. I think I‘ll skip. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 11mo

Great premise—a woman is suddenly released early from prison during the lockdown period of the pandemic. But when she gets on a bus to try to get home, the wheels start to come off. So many opportunities to reflect on incarceration and support for released prisoners, but I found this lacking. #tob24 longlist

A modern day western set during the pandemic, in which prisoners are granted early release and head west to LA. Female-centric, violent, but missing something for me. I‘m worried it was me because I listened to the audiobook and have had a hectic schedule and feel I could have missed some nuances. So take this with a grain of salt, because I‘ve enjoyed the other two I‘ve read of Pochoda‘s.

I definitely didn‘t need more books but after a stressful week, browsing my local bookstores was just the balm I needed! #bookhaul
