Not quite like any book I've read before. The MC, Nagel, arrives in a small seaside town in Norway and immediately begins upending the accepted social order through his eccentric behavior. The "plot" doesn't extend much beyond that. 'Mysteries' is an examination of the deep human psyche, exploring the question of why people behave the way they do, not just as a reaction to external forces but in sometimes inexplicably arbitrary ways.

Very happy that I ended my #2018LitWorldGB journey by meeting my goal of visiting 25 countries. So many good ones throughout the year, and the trip ended in Norway. This is a strange, strange book. Nothing too crazy happens, but the central character is so bizarre, you're never quite sure what he'll do next. I think I liked it? 😯❓
Thanks to @GatheringBooks for putting together such a fun challenge- I enjoyed my literary travels very much! 😎🌍🎒

I have no respect to merchants and preachers; as far as I‘m concerned, their only talent is coming up with the right word at the right time. What is a professional preacher, really? He is a kind of middleman who for the wrong reasons tries to make people buy his goods. The more he sells, the more his stock rises. The louder he hawks his wares, the larger his business grows.

There are some people who cannot help giving. Why? Because they experience a real psychological pleasure in doing so. They don't do it with an eye to their own advantage, they do it on the quiet; they detest doing it openly because that would take away some of the satisfaction. They do it in secret, with quick trembling hands, their breasts rocked by a spiritual well being which they do not themselves

Hobbinol I ❤️this book! 8y

#firstlines "In the middle of the summer of 1891 the most extraordinary things began happening in a small Norwegian coastal town. A stranger by the name of Nagel appeared, a singular character who shook the town by his eccentric behavior and then vanished as suddenly as he had come." #somethingforsept #septphotochallenge #faveclassics #nonlinearnarrative

LeahBergen Speaking of nonlinear narrative... I just, this very moment, finished My Struggle: Book 1. I am completely shattered. 8y
Hobbinol @LeahBergen I hope you give yourself time to rest up before reading the others! Knausgaard is amazing! (The other volumes are somewhat lighter in tone. In the first volume the retrograde timing allows him to introduce future themes. Whereas with Hamsum, the timing feels much more like a lucid dream.) 8y
LeahBergen Yep. I'm going to take a break but I will definitely be picking up book 2. 8y
MrBook Huh. Interesting... 8y
