This Is Where We Talk Things Out by Caitlin Marceau, author of Palimpsest: A Collection of Contemporary Horror follows the gut-wrenching journey of Miller and her estranged mother, Sylvie, who has always had a tense relationship. After Miller's father dies, she agrees to a girls' vacation away from the city to reconnect with the only family she has left. Although she's eager to make things work, Miller can't help but worry that her mother is seeing their countryside retreat as a fun weekend getaway instead of what it really is: a last-ditch effort to repair their relationship. Unfortunately, that quickly becomes the least of Miller's problems. Sylvie's trapped in the past and if Miller's not careful, she will be too. A cross between Stephen King's Misery and Stephanie Wrobel's Darling Rose Gold, This Is Where We Talk Things Out explores the horror of familial trauma, mother-daughter relationships, and what happens when we don't let go.

Books of Horror Indie Author Brawl! This was a hard read, because the conversations between miller and her mother were so triggering. That trapped feeling of having your words twisted and your mind messed with is suffocating and traumatic, and the true horror of the story. The rest was just icing on the cake.

Reggie Oh yes, I think we all know someone like that mother. I have one in my family and there‘s another at work. 7mo

Most like this more than I did. It was all too predictable to get truly immersed in the story. It is well written, just wish she had twisted the trope in a new way.

This is Where We Talk Things Out by Caitlin Marceau is a story that is like a slap to the face, but one that hits you over, and over, and over again.

If you‘re looking for a quick and brutal read that will have you gasping at each scene, then this is a great book for you!

This one made me angry! I had a pit in my stomach the entire time I was reading. Wonderful work!

If you have that one family member who loves to answer a question with a question, loves being oblivious to how cringey hateful they are to you but then turn the tables on you, and morphs into their “poor me!” victim stance, and you‘d love to read a book with a character just like THAT, well have I got the book for you. Miller is gonna try to spend the weekend with her estranged mother, Sylvie, to try and repair their relationship at a remote 👇🏼

Reggie cabin. Spoiler alert, things don‘t go so well. I really liked this and could have used 100 more pages. 2y
TrishB I‘m usually running away from the talking things out!! 2y
Reggie @TrishB usually me too but there‘s always that other family member linked to them that keeps bringing you back, i.e. your favorite parent. 2y

vivastory I have another movie recommendation lol I just watched Prince of Darkness by John Carpenter. Have you seen it? 2y
Reggie @vivastory I have watched it and loved it. The guy from Big Trouble Little China is in there. 2 of them actually. When I was a kid it freaked me out because I slept with my mouth open and I was always scared of some tank carrying demonic liquid would come and drip into me. Lolol 2y
Centique Oh man I do not do well with passive aggressive people either. Just argue with me like a normal person! 🙄 Luckily neither of my parents did that… but I have it in the extended family and friend group BIG time. 2y
Reggie @Centique this is my mother. And I also have one at work. And they are exhausting. Constant eggshell walking and trying not to fall into traps. 2y
Centique @Reggie you deserve a medal for the eggshell walking, honestly. They‘re such hard work! My family has a reputation for being really stoic, so being sympathetic is a reach for most of us. So my in laws don‘t get much from me😬😬 2y
