Reading America
Reading America: Essays on American Literature | Denis Donoghue
10 posts
Here is a selection by the distinguished critic of his essays and commentaries on American writing and writers, from Emerson and Whitman through Auden and Ashbery. Denis Donoghue examines the canon in the light of what he takes to be the central dynamic of the American enterprise--the imperatives of a powerful national past versus the subversions of an irrevocably anarchic spirit.

Update on my progress for #readingtheAmericas2023

KristiAhlers You're doing really well. I need to update my page and see what I have left. 1y
Texreader @KristiAhlers I‘d love to see your progress! You‘re such a fast reader so I‘ll bet you‘re way beyond me. 1y

I‘m a little behind the pace for #ReadingTheAmericas and what else is new! But that‘s okay. I may or may not include all the dependencies, which makes the number a little more manageable…

I think I do need to pivot to South America next so there‘s more red on the map. 🤣

I‘m still working on finding books for some of countries. I‘ve found two for Paraguay, and I‘m going to turn it over to the Litsyverse in the comments to help me decide.

Librarybelle I‘d vote for Travels with My Aunt! 1y
BarbaraBB I don‘t know either of them but I did like the book I read for Paraguay: 1y
azulaco I have The News from Paraguay on my #readingamericas list too. It sounds interesting. I just realized that it‘s based on the true life of Eliza Lynch, who was de facto First Lady of Paraguay during the Paraguayan War. Now I want to read her biography too. 1y

Once again, thanks to @BarbaraBB for reminding me to do a quarterly check in for #ReadingTheAmericas23 🧡 I‘ve managed to visit 30 countries so far, as I‘m using more than one prompt per book. And luckily most have been enjoyable reads! Thanks @Librarybelle for all your encouragement along the way xx

Cinfhen If anyone has recommendations for some of the countries I‘m missing please share below ⬇️ thanks 😊 2y

Time for an update on #ReadingTheAmericas2023. Since January I have ticked off another 8 countries:

- DR: Dominicana
- Trinidad & Tobago: The Bread the Devil Knead
- Jamaica: If I Survive You
- Bolivia: An Uninterrupted View of the Sky
- Canada: The Diviners
- Ecuador: Jawbone
- Aruba: We hebben het over je gehad
- Haiti: Brother, I‘m Dying

With all those small islands it doesn‘t look like much but I‘m pretty pleased so far!

Librarybelle Hooray!! Great progress!! 2y
Cinfhen Ohhh, I need to check my progress too!! Thanks for the reminder xxx 2y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen It‘s the #controlfreak in me 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y

Cinfhen I still need Ecuador - did you enjoy 2y
BarbaraBB It‘s not really enjoyable but it‘s an okay read. I‘d not really recommend it. @Cinfhen (edited) 2y

BarbaraBB This is the StoryGraph link, with the possibility of an early start in December @Hooked_on_books @Cinfhen https://app.thestorygraph.com/reading_challenges/e68cfc81-fda3-4934-a635-eee3a89... 2y
KristiAhlers Oh this will be awesome! 2y
KristiAhlers I‘ve joined! Going to start researching my list! 2y
Cinfhen Woohoo!!! Early start!!!! 2y
squirrelbrain Yay! I‘m in this year! 2y
BarbaraBB @KristiAhlers Researching is such a fun part of the challenge! Glad you‘re joining again! 2y
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain You‘re back! Yay!! 2y
Itchyfeetreader Given I haven‘t got far with Africa I am not sure this is wise but I am in! 2y
BarbaraBB @Itchyfeetreader Of course it‘s wise 😉 good to have you again! 2y
rockpools Ooh, so tempting! I‘m going for a light-on-challenges year for 2023, though, so I‘ll sit this out (and stack all the AMAZING books you find from the sidelines). Have fun! 2y
BarbaraBB @rockpools We‘ll miss you but I know what you mean! The pressure of the challenges 😱😘 2y
jenniferw88 Whoop! Just joined Storygraph challenge - will add my possibilities in a bit! 2y
Bookwormjillk Yay! I‘m in! 2y
BarbaraBB @jenniferw88 Looking forward to them!! 2y
BarbaraBB @Bookwormjillk Nice 👍🏽 👍🏽👍🏽 2y
Daisey I‘m in! I never feel like I read from many countries, but I always love following the posts and adding a few reads I wouldn‘t have experienced otherwise! 2y
Liz_M Yay! I've already started researching Central America and the Caribbean, now off to add South America. 2y
Librarybelle Hooray!!! 2y
Texreader Great!!! 2y
DGRachel Maybe I can do better on that one than I did on Reading Africa. I‘m so disappointed in myself. 😔 At least reading a book for the US will be easy… 2y
CaitZ I'm in again! 2y
Simona I‘m in, and I also planing to finish Reading Africa next year, because this year my reading life was/is very on the rocky side … 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Simona Same, a slow reading year for me too 🤷‍♀️ 2y
Velvetfur The fool's going to do it! - I mean, the sheriff's going to do it! (name that film from the quote 🤣) Thank you for the tag Barbara! I'm always into South/Central American authors so I'm already looking forward to this! Even though I've done only a quarter of Reading Africa.....! 2y
BarbaraBB @Daisey @Liz_M @Texreader @CaitZ So happy to have you all joining us again. It will be great to share suggestions and inspire eachother 🤍🤍 2y
BarbaraBB @DGRachel @Simona @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Velvetfur It‘s a new chance, and probably easier than Africa. And it‘s not about finishing right, it‘s about the good discoveries 😉😘 Happy you‘re joining again 🥰 (edited) 2y
BarbaraBB @Simona I have some worthy suggestions for Africa if your interested ! I have not finished it, and doubt I will, but I enjoyed it more than Asia which I never would have thought! 2y
DGRachel I‘ve started pulling possibilities and I‘m just going to allow myself to read what I want to read, bail on what doesn‘t work for me without feeling pressure to pick something else, and what I finish, I finish. I may even try to work on my Reading Africa list, too. 💖 2y
BarbaraBB @DGRachel That‘s how I‘m going to do it too. I don‘t want the pressure or feel obliged to read or finish books I don‘t want to! 2y
charl08 Very tempting! 2y
Bookwomble Thanks for the tag. I've enjoyed the Reading Africa challenge, and not putting any pressure on myself to complete the whole continent, just enjoying the widening of my reading experience. Feeling the same way about Reading the Americas in 2023 😊 2y
Andrew65 Looking forward to it. 2y
Bookwormjillk @BarbaraBB I enjoyed Africa more than Asia too. I won‘t finish this year, but will try next year. 2y
Currey I am in. Looking forward to it 2y
CarolynM I haven‘t done any reading challenges this year, this might be a good one for next year🙂 2y
Singout @BarbaraBB How do I add a booked as a prompt to a country page? I can find the challenge and the country list, with prompts others have added, but can‘t figure out how to add my own. Thanks! 2y
Singout I‘m in too! Reading Africa has been really interesting! 2y
BarbaraBB @charl08 Please join! 😀 2y
BarbaraBB @Bookwomble That‘s a good way to tackle it I think. I was obsessed with finishing the first challenges but now I am more mellow about it too - it is better! 2y
BarbaraBB @Bookwormjillk I didn‘t know you felt the same. Africa has so many different sides, backgrounds and stories, I really enjoy that! 2y
BarbaraBB @Andrew65 @Currey @CarolynM Really glad you‘re joining. It will be fun! 🤍 2y
BarbaraBB @Singout Happy you‘re joining again! On Storygraph you select a book you want to add by typing its title where it says “Search all books”. On that book‘s page scroll down to “Add to reading challenges”. When you click that one you see the challenges you‘ve joined and can add the book to a specific country. I hope this helps! (edited) 2y
Bookwormjillk @BarbaraBB it‘s also someplace I knew very little about going in 2y
Bookwomble @BarbaraBB I'm temperamentally a completist, which often means focusing on what I've not done, and which sometimes then feels negative. Shifting perspective to acknowledge what I have done feels more positive, and kinder 😊 2y
BarbaraBB @Bookwomble Exactly! I am a completist too and I want to shift my perspective to a more kinder one too! 2y
Simona Thank you @BarbaraBB First I have to track down which countries I already finished just to see where I am with the challenge. For sure I‘m going to need some recommendations and I will let you know 🙏 2y
Jess861 I'm in! This year has been a wash when it comes to reading but I'm hoping I can have a better year next year! 2y
BarbaraBB @Jess861 good to have you joining, it‘ll be fun! 2y
KristiAhlers I‘m totally in! 2y
