Empty Theatre: A Novel: Or, the Lives of King Ludwig II of Bavaria and Empress Sisi of Austria (Queen of Hungary), Cousins, in Their Pursuit o | Jac Jemc

A wildly over-the-top social satire reimagining the mad misadventures of the iconic royal cousins King Ludwig and Empress Sisi, from the incomparable Jac Jemc. History knows them as King Ludwig II of Bavaria and Empress Elizabeth of Austria, icons of the late nineteenth century who died young and left behind magnificent portraits and palaces. But to each other they were Ludwig and Sisi, cousins who shared a passion for beauty and a stubborn refusal to submit to the roles imposed upon them. Ludwig, simultaneously spoiled and punished for his softness and unmanly interests, falls hard for the operas of Richard Wagner and neglects his state duties in the pursuit of art. Sisi, married at the age of sixteen to her beloved Franzl, bristles at the restrictions of her elevated position, the value placed on her beauty, and the simultaneous expectation that she ravage her body again and again in childbirth. Both absurdly vain, both traumatized by the demands of their roles, Sisi and Ludwig struggle against the ideals they are expected to embody, and resist through extravagance, petulance, performance, and frivolity. A tragicomic tour de force, Empty Theatre immerses readers in Ludwig and Sisi's rarefied, ridiculous, restrictive world--where the aesthetics of excess belie the isolation of its inhabitants. With wit, pathos, and imagination, Jac Jemc takes us on an unforgettable journey through two extraordinary parallel lives and the complex, tenuous friendship that linked them.

How to account for bookish moods & whims? This does not seem like a book I'd want to read -- a twin biography of cousins, two mid 19th-century monarchs, King Ludwig of Bavaria, Empress Elisabeth of Austria. I didn't know a thing about them. I don't like historical fiction. And yet, and yet. I did like it. And it is just that, twin portraits from childhood to death of two people who suffered in their roles. Tons of privilege & perpetual misery. 👇

merelybookish It is quite straightforward. Ludwig and Sissy are terrible in many, many ways and still, it was compelling. Power corrupts and royalty is rotten. If that is your belief, it will be confirmed. And yet...there is fascination and a sadness for why we put people in such positions? Do I recommend it? Depends on your whims and fancies, I guess. But I did like it. 7mo
vlwelser I bought this at an indie last year. Because it's pretty. I should read it. 😂 7mo
sarahbarnes I may have to try this. Great review. 😁 7mo
merelybookish @vlwelser They both cared a lot about beauty so they deserve a pretty cover! 😉 7mo
merelybookish @sarahbarnes Thanks! And yes, do! I'd love to hear your thoughts on it! 7mo

Current reading mood. Bright 🟡 🟡 🟡 🟡 covers.
These books are VERY different but enjoying both so far.

vivastory I just looked at the description of the Jemc & am intrigued. I remember liking Grip Of It 7mo
merelybookish @vivastory I'm not quite done but will review when I am. Part of my curiosity is what led her to write it. (Seems a random topic.) I had never heard of her before. 7mo

Really liked. The royals are at times very spoiled and petty and cruel, and at times really to be pitied. It‘s awful how Sisi‘s torment at the hands of her mother in law translates into her abuse to her kids and spouse. For all their riches, not enviable
