pickA gorgeous Christmas present, Cruse‘s “Stuck Rubber Baby” got on my radar as I was getting into underground comix, especially from R. Crumb. Cruse is a lot more realistic here in his depictions than that famous deviant, but with each chapter I marveled at his play with panels, his distinct voices in each character, and the memoir framework of the novel. Great LGBT lit and wonderfully illustrated. Makes me excited to read other graphic novels!
pickThis was a really interesting graphic novel. It tells the story of a closeted gay white man growing up in the South during the civil rights era.
pickMy first LGBT read. A mixture of love, the civil rights movement of the 60s and gay injustices and culture. I really like this graphic novel in the way that we can get to see a obscure moment on the life of Toland Polk, where trying to find himself is a diffuclt path to follow, full of treason, happiness, new friends and disaster. I really recommend it if you are looking for a political-inspired graphic novel. #Recommendsday

My #uglycover is Howard Cruse's Stuck Rubber Baby. Besides having such an ugly cover, it's actually the worst graphic novel I've ever read (which admittedly isn't many). It has such a good premise (homosexuality and racism in the Deep South in the 60s), but utterly failed to make me connect with the characters. The drawings are waaaay too busy, and it jumps around so much that I could hardly understand what was going on. #septphotochallenge
