Titanium Noir
Titanium Noir: A Novel | Nick Harkaway
8 posts | 8 read | 14 to read
"Cal Sounder is a detective working for the police on certain very sensitive cases. So when he's called in to investigate a homicide at a local apartment, he is surprised at first to see that the victim appears to be a rather typical, milquetoast techie. But on closer inspection, he finds the victim is over seven feet tall. And even though he doesn't look a day over thirty, he is actually ninety years old. Clearly, he is a Titan-one of this dystopian, near-future society's genetically-altered elites. There are only a few thousand Titans worldwide, all thanks to Stefan Tonfamecasca's discovery of the controversial T7 genetic therapy, which elevated his family to near godlike status. A dead Titan is big news . . . a murdered Titan is unimaginable. But Titans are Cal's specialty. In fact, his ex-girlfriend, Athena, is a Titan. And not just any Titan-she's Stefan's daughter, heir to the Tonfamecasca empire. As Cal digs deeper into the murder investigation, he begins to unweave the complicated threads of what should have been a straightforward case, and it soon becomes clear he's on the trail of a crime whose roots run deep into the dark heart of the world. Titanium Noir is a tightly woven, intricate tale of murder, betrayal, and vengeance"--

Strong opening page/paragraph. Well, whatever, I liked it enough to read the book.

A titan was murdered and Cal investigates.

An interesting blend of genre and interesting world-building. Snarky MC, first person POV, villains with ethics and Sci-fi that makes sense.

If you're looking for a sci fi twist on classic noir mystery (and maybe just a smidge less dark), I can highly recommend this one.
A very fast read, the world building dresses up the corners but doesn't let the narrative get bogged down in science talk, the dialogue is snappy, the writing - well, I'm starting to think I'm biased, but I really love the way Harkaway writes: 1/3

Robotswithpersonality 2/3 the strong sense of lively characters and relationships in just a few lines, the POV/inner life of the main character, the reality of bad things happening and somehow still holding onto the idea, recognizing that there are good actors. People might have to get their hands dirty, but they truly care for those around them, try to protect those who stumble into harm's way.

Robotswithpersonality 3/3 I think a non-asshole Titan POV would be a fascinating read, but that would be a very different book....maybe a sequel/companion novel?....🤔🙏🏼
I would also like to shout out Jack Smyth because this cover design ROCKS. 👏🏻

27/150 I didn't plan to go on a mystery binge, but my last 3 books have all been murder mysteries. Three very different worlds and types of stories. Here its gritty, detective noir, the gumshoe in a world of genetically altered supermen (and women). When a Titan is murdered, Cal Sounder is called in to investigate, which leads, as these things do, to a much larger conspiracy. I liked the gritty feel of this world
⬇️⬇️⬇️

RamsFan1963 the clear line between the haves (the Titans) and the have nots (everyone else). I was a little let down by the ending, though it made sense, it pretty much shuts the door on any possible sequel, which is too bad because this is a very intriguing world. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫 8mo

I had fun with this. Cal is a detective who is investigating a crime. Titans are the genetically enhanced elite.

This was a fun, fast, noir, PI story with humor & great dialog. The world, politics & premise were all interesting. I finished it in one sitting.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/4

I loved this. It has all the grit, dark humor, and violence of a Raymond Chandler novel or early 1940s Humphrey Bogart noir film, with a Sci-Fi twist to keep it fresh. The Sci-Fi element gave a different flavor to the mafia-esque characters, and a little more room for the author to play with the noir tropes. It‘s a fast read, well-plotted and executed, and highly entertaining. If you‘re a fan of classic noir, don‘t miss this one.

Blaire Fab review! Definitely stacked. 2y
AlaMich I loved Angelmaker, which was totally bonkers, and this sound intriguing as well. 2y
DGRachel @AlaMich This was my first from this author but Angelmaker sounds amazing! Off to see if I can get it on my Kobo… 2y
