Gideon the Ninth meets Black Sun in this queer, M?ori-inspired debut fantasy about a police officer who is murdered, brought back to life with a mysterious new power, and tasked with protecting her city from an insidious evil threatening to destroy it. The port city of Hainak is alive: its buildings, its fashion, even its weapons. But, after a devastating war and a sweeping biotech revolution, all its inhabitants want is peace, no one more so than Yat Jyn-Hok a reformed-thief-turned-cop who patrols the streets at night. Yat has recently been demoted on the force due to "lifestyle choices" after being caught at a gay club. She's barely holding it together, haunted by memories of a lover who vanished and voices that float in and out of her head like radio signals. When she stumbles across a dead body on her patrol, two fellow officers gruesomely murder her and dump her into the harbor. Unfortunately for them, she wakes up. Resurrected by an ancient power, she finds herself with the new ability to manipulate life force. Quickly falling in with the pirate crew who has found her, she must race against time to stop a plague from being unleashed by the evil that has taken root in Hainak.

4/5 ⭐️ This was quite the genre blending adventure! Great commentary on government and police corruption, LGBTQIA rights, class warfare, and more all set in a fantasy biopunk world. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series coming out this fall!

A city on the edge of upheaval. A cop trying to keep her head down in the corrupt police force that demoted her, then murdered her. & the powers she gains to protect her city as she‘s resurrected.

This was gorgeous to listen to. The combination of noir, fantasy, horror & biopunk was fascinating. Loved a story of the reluctant heroes, saving their world because nobody else would. Could have done with more character depth, but loved it! 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Hainak is a port that survived the (barely defined) revolution and embraced the biotechnology that followed in its wake. Constable Jyn Yat-Hak‘s “delicate sensibilities” have come to the attention of her bosses. Sentenced to the night shift she finds the rotten core threatening her city. There‘s a quest, gods, pain, lost/found loves. There are truths and wonders in this fascinating novel. Beautifully written. Highly recommended. Pirates too!

There was much I enjoyed about this queer, biotech-infused, Maori-inspired, New Weird novel—the setting and world building were fascinating, but I got lost trying to follow the plot and get a deeper sense of the characters. It may be that I just didn‘t have the brain space available for this one at this time but it took me a long time to get through it. Still, recommended for fans of The Black Sun and Annihilation!
