This was a interesting book! Made me cringe a lot but I learned a lot of new things about BDSM!

I am not into the tone of this book. It feels like the author is trying to scandalize and titillate me with the sexual content. That is just not something I'm interested in. Belcher's writing is propulsive, readable, and she can set a scene. But for memoirs about queer coming of age and sex work, I prefer Amber Dawn and Melissa Febos. I'd be interested to read reviews by sex workers because it feels like it's written for a non-sex worker audience.
This memoir mixes Belcher coming out as a lesbian in small town West Virginia with her later years working as a professional dominatrix while in grad school in LA. I can‘t help but compare this to Melissa Febos‘ memoir Whip Smart, which also covers growing up queer and working as a domme while in school. If you choose one, read Whip Smart. Belcher‘s is much more titillating, but Febos wins with her deeper introspection. ⬇️
5☆An thought provoking, queer coming of age memoir examining sexuality and shame. I loved how Belcher examines the politics, economics and power of sex work. It reminded me of other great books I have read in the last year on the subject. It facinating and empowered reading. Couldnt put it down, this will go down as one of my favorite memoirs of the year, highly reccomend! Available July 12th. #bookreview #bookreviewer
