I came close to giving this a pick but couldn‘t pull the trigger on it. This is an Irish gothic novel and it has a strong premise but somehow falls flat. If you‘re from Ireland then you‘ll get a lot of the slang but if you‘re not be prepared to have google ready to translate. And after awhile I said screw it and quit bothering. Hence the meh feeling here for the story overall.

I noticed that this book has only been posted about three times and one was a bail. I can see why someone wold bail as it started off a little slow, but glad I stuck with it because it is a beautiful and haunting read. The ending has a nifty twist. #mountTBRchallenge

One of my resolutions is to read at least 50 books that I currently own.😬 I am not sure where I picked this one up from, but it was certainly a pleasant surprise when I opened it to find it had been signed. #mountTBRchallenge

This may be a great book, but my respect for its endorsers hiked my expectations. The pov rang false to me, but that could have been my mood. I am going to try it again some other time, when I will try to remember the author is also/mostly a playwright and so maybe playing a different sort of game than I'm seeking in a novel.

Starting this based on the recommendations of Michael Ondaatje and Colm Toibin. My expectations are high.

No idea where I picked it up, but this one has all my favorite ingredients: #1880s, in #Ireland/ Northern Ireland, #local titbits, colorful #language and #folklore and metaphor, and #intrigue--to the max! Short and blunt, like a dagger to the heart.
