Angel of Rome: And Other Stories
Angel of Rome: And Other Stories | Jess Walter
11 posts | 12 read | 1 reading | 8 to read
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Beautiful Ruins and The Cold Millions comes a stunning collection about those moments when everything changes--for the better, for the worse, for the outrageous--as a diverse cast of characters bounces from Italy to Idaho, questioning their roles in life and finding inspiration in the unlikeliest places. We all live like we're famous now, curating our social media presences, performing our identities, withholding those parts of ourselves we don't want others to see. In this riveting collection of stories from acclaimed author Jess Walter, a teenage girl tries to live up to the image of her beautiful, missing mother. An elderly couple confronts the fiction writer eavesdropping on their conversation. A son must repeatedly come out to his senile father while looking for a place to care for the old man. A famous actor in recovery has a one-night stand with the world's most surprising film critic. And in the romantic title story, a shy twenty-one-year-old studying Latin in Rome during "the year of my reinvention" finds himself face-to-face with the Italian actress of his adolescent dreams.Funny, poignant, and redemptive, this collection of short fiction offers a dazzling range of voices, backdrops, and situations. With his signature wit and bighearted approach to the darkest parts of humanity, Walter tackles the modern condition with a timeless touch, once again "solidifying his place in the contemporary canon as one of our most gifted builders of fictional worlds" (Esquire).

Found this in a discount store and snagged it as I enjoyed Beautiful Ruins many years ago. For whatever reason I really enjoy short stories even as I tend to retain little memory of them in the time that follows after I‘ve finished the book. Some of these were delightful though - including the first story in the book and the title story. Definitely will read his other collection of short stories.

A beautiful day for sitting with a stack of books while on outdoor supervision duty with my niece.

I really need to read more Jess Walter. This is my third, and his writing just flows. It is obscene how flawlessly these stories unfold. So many different people from a young American on a film set Rome to a dad with dementia in Boise to drunken professors in the snow in Mississippi. He can take apart what makes people tick and just build a beautiful story around it! 🤩

BarbaraBB Ow, intriguing 🤨 1y
Cinfhen I will definitely pick this up when I‘m looking for short stories! I thought BR was amazing 1y
Cinfhen But I couldn‘t get into this one 1y

Anna40 @Megabooks borrowed it after reading your review. Just finished Town Country. Loved the humor and depth, for lack of a better word. @Cinfhen will pick up Beautiful Ruins. Hadn‘t heard of this author before. 1y
Cinfhen @Anna40 it takes a few chapters for the story to really flow but once you get a feel for the characters & plot the book becomes unputdownable 😃 I hope you‘ll love it as much as I did! 1y
Anna40 @Cinfhen ok! Thanks for the heads up. I often bail after a few pages. Sometimes I wish I‘d hang in there, might be missing out on a good story 1y
Cinfhen I‘m generally a quick bailer too; but something told me to hold on with this book @Anna40 1y
Suet624 I didn‘t recognize that this author wrote BR. Now I‘ll have to stack this one! 1y
Megabooks @Suet624 yes! I also enjoyed BR and this other short story collection. 1y
Megabooks @Cinfhen @Anna40 I agree that BR takes a minute to get into. I think I picked it up twice before really digging in and finishing it, but so worth it! I also enjoyed this short story collection. 1y
Cinfhen I didn‘t realize that he has such an extensive backlog!!!! Must try more from him❤️ 1y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I think he‘s written 10ish fiction and one nonfiction, which sounds cool too. 1y
Cinfhen Ohhhh, the NF sounds great 👍🏽 1y
Suet624 Thanks, I‘ve just stacked We Live in Water and Ruby Ridge. 1y
SamAnne The setting might be dated, but perhaps my favorite is The Financial Lives of Poets. And some of his first books were great gritty mysteries. The first one is Over Tumbled Graves, set in Spokane, where Jess and I both live. He's a wonderful guy and does so much to support access to arts and literature to disadvantaged populations in our city. And he's funny as hell. 1y

I‘d been putting off reading THE COLD MILLIONS but now I‘ve really got to get on it.

I feel like not enough people talk about Jess Walter.
That needs to change.
Everything of his, I end up giving 5 ⭐️
I listened to the Audible version of this story - I think it‘s included with subscription.
The blurb here says it seems to be part of a collection of his due out next year.
However you do so, get this into your brain. Beautiful, classic storytelling with the right amounts of drama, melancholy, & humor. Chef‘s kiss of a book 😚
