Ascendant, the first book in Songs of Chaos by Michael R. Miller, is a fresh spin on dragon-rider fantasy 🐉, perfect for Eragon fans seeking a darker twist. Holt, unlike the classic hero, is flawed and grounded, with a gritty bond to his dragon, Ash, that‘s unpredictable and raw. Miller‘s world 🌌 is morally complex, with dragons that follow their own agendas, making this an intense, layered story that stands apart. ⚔️

An easy 5/5 star read. Good world building, magic system set up, character development etc etc. Engaging story that was well paced. A coming of age + dragon rider quest story. Small cast of characters mainly single POV so you needn't create a flow chart to keep track of things. Highly recommend.

Dragons ☑️ Adventure ☑️ It had a similar feel to Eragon (which I really like), but still a unique storyline.

As a commoner, Holt will never qualify to join the order and fly a dragon. So he steals an egg that would have been destroyed because of a suspected weakness in the developing baby. Then Ash is born blind. Together Holt and Ash learn to overcome the assumptions others make about them.

I enjoyed the epic adventure feel of it all. ⬇️

Zuhkeeyah I struggled with the idea that Ash and Holt call each other “boy”. To my mind, it‘s a term used when speaking down to someone. I know the author was trying to write in an American accent instead of his native British, but I feel like an editor should have adjusted this. 3y
