A Loyal Character Dancer
A Loyal Character Dancer | Qiu Xiaolong
4 posts | 7 read | 3 to read
Inspector Chens mentor in the Shanghai Police Bureau has assigned him to escort U.S. Marshal Catherine Rohn. Her mission is to bring Wen, the wife of a witness in an important criminal trial, to the United States. Inspector Rohn is already en route when Chen learns that Wen has unaccountably vanished from her village in Fujian. Or is this just what he is supposed to believe? Chen resents his role; he would rather investigate the triad killing in Shanghais beauteous Bund Park. But his boss insists that saving face with Inspector Rohn has priority. So Chen Cao, the ambitious son of a father who imbued him with Confucian precepts, must tread warily as he tries once again to be a good cop, a good man, and also a loyal Party member. The body of a man wearing Valentino silk pyjamas is found in a public park and the wife of a witness in an American trial of people traffickers has disappeared. Chen works with an American marshal to find the missing woman but is not so sure the other case is unrelated.

Although there is less day-to-day life, it was still the Chinese background and the constraints Chen works under which made this interesting - and of course the food.

gradcat @EadieB Okay, I am now convinced that you own all of the detective series novels ever written!! 😂🤣😂 5y
EadieB @gradcat I think I do because I had 10,000 books when I had to stop buying books because there was no more room in my house. I would only pay .50 or $1.00 for each book. I now have at least 5,000 and still need to downsize. 5y
Andrew65 I need an X author for my audiobook #LitsyAtoZ, this could be perfect for that. Great cover. 5y

Catching up on some book challenge posts, this book was wonderful. The second in this Chinese detective mystery series. There's the crime to be solved and then the layers of political intrigue to navigate in communist China. This story adds in an American representative and things get very complicated very fast. Plus Inspector Chen is a poet and a literature enthusiast. Excellent book in a so far excellent series!

DrexEdit This book was for the letter X in the #litsyAtoZ challenge.
