NSFW: A Novel | Isabel Kaplan
4 posts | 4 read | 7 to read
For fans of Sweetbitter and Severance, a compulsively readable debut novel about a young woman trying to succeed in Hollywood without selling her soul From the outside, the highly driven narrator in Isabel Kaplan's debut novel appears the vision of empowerment. She has just graduated from a prestigious college and landed an entry-level position at XBC, a leading TV network. The daughter of a prominent feminist attorney, she grew up outside the industry, more well-versed in implicit bias and gender dynamics than box office hits. At first, the nonstop, high adrenaline work environment at XBC motivates her to try harder. She takes on extra script coverage, masters administrative drudgeries, and devotes her early mornings to cult-like fitness classes that fellow assistants swear by. But as she climbs the ranks, she confronts the harsh realities of creating change from the inside. Her points only get attention when echoed by a male colleague. Employees gossip about who XBC's female president must have slept with. She hears whispers of abusive bosses and even sexual misconduct. Her personal and professional lives collide as she turns to her mother for support, uncovering industry secrets that will permanently alter both XBC and her future. With blisteringly sharp prose and a darkly humorous voice, NSFW is an unflinching exploration of the grey area between empowerment and complicity, and a searing, unforgettable portrait of what success costs in a patriarchal world.

Sharp and funny this story felt like a pressure cooker, and I quickly became immersed. I appreciated the openness of the ending, which allows you the reader to reflect and think of what you'd do. It demonstrated that things that seem black and white seldom are just that.

While the day-to-day look at assistant life in Hollywood was interesting, Kaplan did a great job of leaving space for morally ambiguous choices.

The unnamed MC returns from Harvard to look for a job in the entertainment industry. Her mom‘s connections land her an entry-level job at a network. As she progresses in her first year, she learns about sexual assault allegations against multiple people in the company with very different results. CW ⬇️

Cinfhen Was this print or audio?? Sounds like it has potential!! 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen this was audio, and it was well narrated! I picked it up at the audible sitewide sale. I don‘t know if you were able to get any with all that you‘ve had going on, but I picked up a dozen books that were under $8. 👍🏻 2y
Cinfhen I did pick up a few 😁but I missed this one 🙃I‘ll look on scribd - it seems like a #BorrowNotBuy 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen so interested to find out what you picked up!! I got a bunch from the national book award longlist and some ones that had been sitting on my wishlist awhile. 2y

Wasn‘t quite sure what to expect when I picked this up, but this was an absolute treat. Kaplan‘s debut is sharply written, funny, and her take on #MeToo issues is nuanced and thoughtful. The narrator‘s mother is splendidly awful. Watch out for it in July.
