Heiresses: The Lives of the Million Dollar Babies | Laura Thompson
3 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
New York Times bestselling author Laura Thompson returns with Heiresses, a fascinating look at the lives of heiresses throughout history and the often tragic truth beneath the gilded surface. Heiresses: surely they are among the luckiest women on earth. Are they not to be envied, with their private jets and Chanel wardrobes and endless funds? Yet all too often those gilded lives have been beset with trauma and despair. Before the 20th century a wifes inheritance was the property of her husband, making her vulnerable to kidnap, forced marriages, even confinement in an asylum. And in modern times, heiresses fell victim to fortune-hunters who squandered their millions. Heiresses tells the stories of these million dollar babies: Mary Davies, who inherited Londons most valuable real estate, and was bartered from the age of twelve; Consuelo Vanderbilt, the original American Dollar Heiress, forced into a loveless marriage; Barbara Hutton, the Woolworth heiress who married seven times and died almost penniless; and Patty Hearst, heiress to a newspaper fortune who was arrested for terrorism. However, there are also stories of independence and achievement: Angela Burdett-Coutts, who became one of the greatest philanthropists of Victorian England; Nancy Cunard, who lived off her mother's fortune and became a pioneer of the civil rights movement; and Daisy Fellowes, elegant linchpin of interwar high society and noted fashion editor. Heiresses is about the lives of the rich, whoas F. Scott Fitzgerald saidare different. But it is also a bigger story about how all women fought their way to equality, and sometimes even found autonomy and fulfillment.

This one's very interesting. I got an ARC but I'm just now getting through it because of classes. Lots of women who were famous/infamous in their time but that most people have never heard of today. It's not as strictly linear as I would prefer but it's a good read.

Spanning centuries, this book shows the perils & seemingly inherent unhappiness that accompanies a hefty inheritance for daughters. This one isn‘t exactly what I expected- though each chapter ostensibly focuses on one particular heiress, each section also devolves into an attempt to cram in as many other heiresses as possible. This makes for a muddled & disorganized read that leaves you googling for your own research. Interesting but unfocused!

Aims42 Thank you for this honest review! Sounds like one to borrow from the library at some point, not right away 👍 3y
TorieStorieS @aims42 I really wanted to enjoy this one- but maybe a slower and more patient approach would be better than trying to read it straight through? There were moments I did enjoy but not enough of them! 3y

So glad this book is done. I should of DNF'D it but thought it would get better. The writing was so dry. It read like a research paper you would write for school.

TorieStorieS Book twin!! I did DNF this one… gah! 3y
