14 posts | 21 read | 8 to read
A NEW YORK TIMES #1 bestseller! In "The Black Mirror," a series of brutal murders pushes Batman's detective skills to the limit and forces him to confront one of Gotham City's oldest evils. Helpless and trapped in the deadly Mirror House, Batman must fight for his life against one of Gotham City's oldest and most powerful evils! Then, in a second story called "Hungry City," the corpse of a killer whale shows up on the floor of one of Gotham City's foremost banks. The event begins a strange and deadly mystery that will bring Batman face-to-face with the new, terrifying faces of organized crime in Gotham.

Reread. It's been a while since I've read Scott Snyder's Batman, but this comic is still amazing. While he would still play in the DC sandbox with Dark Nights, Last Knight is a proper conclusion to Snyder's iconic Batman run. The world has gone to hell, but that's not going to stop Batman from finding the truth, making a plan, and inspiring others to fight one more time.

Another really good Batman story. The dark knight (Dick Greyson) and commissioner Gordon pursue a serial killer throughout Gotham. I‘m always happy for a detective story, and a grisly, dark one like this is best. Recommended!

Although Last Knight on Earth is set outside of the normal continuity, it shares some of the same themes as Snyder's Justice League run, especially the idea of ordinary people siding with Doom over Justice. It's a greatest hits of Snyder and Capullo's Batman run from New 52 to Dark Nights: Metal.

This is Snyder and Capullo at their absolute best. Batman tries to rekindle hope in his old allies in a post-apocalyptic landscape, accompanied by the Joker's mysteriously preserved head. As a Black Label story, Last Knight on Earth isn't bound by the larger DC continuity.

Another stellar outing for Snyder and Capullo. Their partnership on Batman's story has been legendary, and this was an appropriately epic conclusion.

Finished some GNs that have been sitting in the TBR stack for a bit. Both titles are very different in almost every way, but both excellent.

SSTK is a historical aimed at the MG crowd and with a strong social justice message.

BLKOE is a grim post-apoc that is crazypants and super dark. Blew my mind.

Both will be released in trade this spring.

To me, Scott Snyder's early Batman work is actually more impressive than his post New 52 run. Maybe it's that writing Dick Grayson as Batman gave him more freedom, but these stories are somehow darker and more disturbing (his take on the Joker is particularly terrifying). I also like the focus on Jim Gordon and his family. I remembered this being a really strong run of Detective Comics, so I'm glad to see it holds up on a repeat read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Anton As a sidenote, I'm really enjoying reading with the Guided View function that zooms in and out of the different comic panels. Currently I'm using an iPad Mini for comics (the screen on my old iPad isn't as sharp) and it makes them a lot easier to read on the smallish screen. 6y

ComiXology has a lot of Batman collections on sale right now, so I decided to pick up this early Scott Snyder one (with the incomparable Jock on artwork). This is the Detective Comics run that got me excited about Snyder taking over Batman with the New 52 relaunch (which worked out pretty well), and it's a great take on Dick Grayson as the Caped Crusader.

Bruce Wayne has just come back from the dead and while he was “dead” Dick Grayson became Batman. The new Batman‘s Robin is Bruce Wayne‘s son, Damien, who does not make an appearance in this book but is mentioned. Tim Drake becomes Red Robin. It‘s a good story I give it four stars out of five. It‘s not Scott Snyder‘s best but the storytelling is spot on and the artwork by Jock is fine stuff.

AlaMich @Booksandcooks Whenever I recommend the show to people, I always warn them about the very first episode so they don‘t freak out. 🐖😳 7y
Megabooks @AlaMich the only one that really freaked me out is the one where the people run around in masks and there are the crucified people! So creepy even though they showed it wasn‘t real. 7y
ParkerGray Ah, I just finished the fourth season yesterday! Such a different vibe overall from the last three. 7y

With The Black mirror, a new member has been inducted into Batman's Rogues Gallery. I would go so far as to say that I have only ever encountered this level of psychological maiming in Batman stories with The Joker at the other end. However, in this story The Joker is the penultimate stop before you reach the final destination. A destination that is well and truly The Black Mirror held in front of not just Batman, but Gotham City itself.
