A fictional account of Martin Luther's secret stay at Wartburg castle in the 1520s, this one was a lot of fun to read. Zaimoglu joyfully mimics the vocabulary and style of 16th-century German, which made me smile and chuckle over and over again. Choosing to tell the story from his bodyguard's perspective is a neat literary trick, also because Zaimoglu's Luther is a superstitious and vulgar man whose paranoid ramblings get tedious rather quickly.
