This is the first one focusing on her grandmother, a French woman, marring a Moroccan man. They move to his home country. In a country under French colonial rule tensions are high and being in a mixed marriage isn‘t easy.
The second book is already waiting on me at the library
so-soAt an intellectual level it was really interesting to read a novel about the tensions of colonisation in a context more distant from my own. I know much less about French colonisation, particularly in places like Morocco, than I do other contexts. However, something about this novel kept me at a distance, so while I found the ideas interesting I never really felt like I was in the narrative, or connected to the characters.
Morocco won against Portugal in the World Cup quarter finals and it's been mayhem where I live (a diverse neighbourhood in France): non-stop horn honking, screams, impromptu fireworks (which I didn't manage to photograph). This is going to be a long night...

When I realised the bookshop was going to be closed for 2 days ( jubilee bank holiday) - I hoofed on down for supplies before the doors closed! 🤣
