Look who broke their own no-buy rule. I‘m now £X amount further away from the Japan trip but I guess I‘ll live.

Sleepy!Casey helped me read more of THE JUSTICE OF KINGS over my obscenely early breakfast. (Dear tired body: WHY do you keep waking me up so early?) I don‘t think I‘ll be able to finish it today, but I‘ll definitely get it in the bag tomorrow. After that, I‘ll need a break before the sequel. While it‘s good, I haven‘t found it as moreish as the rest of the fantasy-loving world. 😔 I suspect my pseudo-medieval burnout is to blame.
I was uncharitable to THE JUSTICE OF KINGS when I called it “a fairly typical pseudo-medieval fantasy.” It‘s a cut above the sort of thing where a farm boy with an allergy to contractions teams up with a robed wizard, or what have you. It DOES take a little while to capture something separate from that type of book‘s FEEL, though. I‘m now a little less than 50% in and it‘s become a lot more tense and engaging. I may come to love it after all.
I read the first 23% of THE JUSTICE OF KINGS while I babysat some schnauzers who I forgot to photograph with the book. (Poop.) It came highly recommended by a trusted friend and it‘s also got rave reviews on Litsy, but I‘m still waiting for that BAM moment. Right now, it feels like a fairly typical pseudo-medical fantasy with average-interest characters, and I need really stellar characters to sell me on P-M stuff. Hopefully it‘ll build well.
I don‘t buy a ton of books these days, so my seven 2024 purchases (so far) constitute pretty wild behaviour for me. There‘ve been some great sales lately, though, so I was happy to nab a friend‘s enthusiastic rec (tagged) plus its sequel, a time travel caper, a wishlisted romance, my own copy of my favourite Canada Reads 2023 title, V.E. Schwab‘s latest, and a random fantasy with a pretty cover and a good price point.
🎧 It‘s gruesome with plenty of Sword play but it‘s also the tale of a girl who‘s life was saved when she was taken in by a Justice 2X her age to roam the land investigating & doling out the emperor‘s justice. She tells their story as a wisened old woman with a modicum of hind sight.
Action, politics, combat, horror, morality all combine for a compelling fast paced engaging read! Good character development. The narrator was Helena.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️3/4
This book absolutely annihilated my heart and left me an emotional wreck. I loved every bit of it and loved every character and I can‘t wait for the next book because I need to know what happens with Vonvalt.
This is one of my most anticipated reads of the year. Stacked upon Mt TBR. The 3 edges are sprayed & stenciled with the scales of justice.
February GSFF subscription box from Goldsboro Books.
My February Goldsboro book arrived today! 🎉🎉🎉 Every month when I see that white box sitting on my stoop I become so filled with joy I'm sure I could float right up to the moon! 😄❤📖 I love the sprayed edges on this one! It looks so awesome! 😍 Chaplin also wanted to check it out! #catsoflitsy #littenkitten #chaplin #goldsboro #goldsborobooks
