The Northern Lights Lodge
The Northern Lights Lodge | Julie Caplin
7 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
Escape to the cosiest little lodge in Iceland for love, log fires and the Northern Lights... With a shattered heart and her career completely in tatters, Lucy needs to get away from her life in the UK. But, when she takes a job as hotel manager of the Northern Lights Lodge, she doesn't quite expect to find herself in a land of bubbling hot springs and snowflake-dusted glaciers - and in the company of gorgeous Scottish barman, Alex. Determined to turn her life around, Lucy sets about making the lodge the number one romantic destination in Iceland - even though romance is the last thing she wants. However, as Alex and Lucy grow closer under the dancing lights of the aurora, Lucy might just learn how to fall in love again... Readers love Julie Caplin! This was a really lovely cosy romance. I don‘t read a lot of romance but have been getting into it recently. I liked the setting and I liked seeing a career minded heroine who didn‘t have to change or become less ambitious to have character growth and fall in love. I now want to move to an Icelandic lodge where a gorgeous man will cook for me and help me catch escaped sheep.

Emilymdxn I saw a previous review saying there were a lot of text errors in a galley copy but please don‘t be put off by that if you see this on kindle unlimited - no issues with stuff like that at all in the copy I got 3y

Do you ever have those days where everything just feels very on top of you? Work is very packed with new things I‘m not very trained yet on how to do and I haven‘t had time for my own projects in ages between that and moving flats. I can‘t even remember the last time I exercised which isn‘t ideal :/ Managed to slip out to Starbucks for a few mins at lunchtime for a muffin and some reading.

Aims42 Yes, I totally understand that feeling! I hope everything quiets down soon 💖 Glad you were able to recharge at Starbucks for a bit!! 3y
HeartOfBabel I wholly understand the struggle, however I have been fortunate enough to take a sabbatical of sorts to help realign and restore some of the overcrowding and insignificant distractions of life. Affording me the means to rekindle desire, meaning and purpose. Hope you can recapture the value of your time! 3y

I‘ve had a bit of a mini reading slump recently trying to read literary fiction on top of moving flats, getting everything sorted and a major busy period at work. I haven‘t given up on the books I was trying to read but I found I couldn‘t face susanna clarke in the middle of being stressed.

I found this series on kindle which seems to be 8 books about stressed British women going to other countries where hot men cook them local foods… hello 😘

Mehso-so

This cozy romance is set in a lodge in Iceland. I won't lie, I struggled with the book quite a lot. I hope all my issues are based on the fact that I read a review copy and not the finished book.
The lodge and the Icelandic staff are great. The nature is described in such a lot of detail that I really would give my left arm for a cleaning job at the Northern Lights Lodge.

3.3 points -- not a “meh“ but also not “yeah“

julesG Lucy, the female MC, lost her job in a five-star hotel in Manchester. Due to her unwanted internet fame she has had a hard time finding a job and when she is offered a part time contract as a manager of a lodge hotel in Iceland she sees it as punishment --- honestly, I would cut off my left arm for a two month working contract in Iceland, even in winter. 6y
julesG Alex, hotel manager from Scotland, currently working in Paris, is on an undercover mission at the lodge. He has to snoop around because his boss would like to buy the hotel for his chain of boutique hotels. Well, Alex rubbed me the wrong way from the start, until about chapter 10. He behaved so bohemian at the start, very un-Scottish like, and suddenly, a few weeks into his stint at the lodge, he realises just how ... 6y
julesG much he missed the connection to nature and Scotland. He has a big problem with the Icelanders belief in fairy folk - a Scot?! Oh, please!!!!

Time inconsistencies - a pet peeve of mine - were also a problem, but might have been edited out - I only read an ARC after all.

#NewToMe vegan cream, for my spicy vegan carrot soup.

Might have added a few too many sunflower seeds.

Since I'm alone at home until Friday, I'll also do the #NetGalley #ARC #TBR challenge during the next three days. Will not be able to do it at the weekend.

dariazeoli I love sunflower seeds 6y
MidnightBookGirl That looks delicious! As do your reading plans. 6y
alisiakae How did it taste? Looks yummy! I can‘t eat most vegan creams because they usually contain coconut milk, which I am allergic to. ☹️ 6y
julesG @dariazeoli @MidnightBookGirl @4thhouseontheleft Delicious! Spicy but not dragon fire. The vegan cream was oat based. It's okay, especially for savoury, but I would not want to whip it up for cake. I'm trying rice based cream next time. Both kids don't like coconut milk, so I will not try the coconut milk based cream. Anyway, it's an alternative to dairy. But it is very expensive, especially since it's organic and only available in certain shops. 6y
