I really wanted to love my first play at the National after lockdown, and parts of this were good so it‘s not a total pan, but there was so much I didn‘t like, particularly compared to Anne Carson‘s translations.
When it‘s so important to the plot that Philoctetes be trapped on an uninhabited island, why add not only the chorus as extra island inhabitants but also a large prison and boats we never see?
