Such an interesting woman and career. Bessie Smith was Empress of the Blues, a highly successful blueswoman of the early 20th century. I listened to a lot of her recordings while reading. So powerful. The author is Scotland‘s national poet. A fan of Smith since childhood, the book was as much a love letter to her idol as it was a biography. That we have so few resources on Smith‘s life is a tragedy. Nothing to give us her thoughts about her life.
