7 posts | 3 read | 12 to read
From Stephanie Hemphill, author of the Printz Honor winner Your Own, Sylvia and the acclaimed novel Wicked Girls: A Novel of the Salem Witch Trials, comes the fascinating story of gothic novelist Mary Shelley, most famous for the classic Frankenstein. An all-consuming love affair with famed poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, a family torn apart by scandal, a young author on the brink of greatness: Hideous Love is the story of the mastermind behind one of the most iconic figures in all of literature, a monster constructed out of dead bodies and brought to life by the tragic Dr. Frankenstein. This luminous verse novel reveals how Mary Shelley became one of the most celebrated authors in history.

Mehso-so

Another dollar tree find. Told entirely in poetry from Mary Shelley‘s point of view. I know I‘ve read other books about her and Percy. It was alright. Quick to read due to the poetry. I‘m just glad to get some old ones off my shelf and tbr.

Panpan

Soooo this ended up being a pan for me. I didn‘t understand why it was written in freeform verse. And the book literally ends with her husbands death, even though she lived 30-40 more years after and wrote many more books. Whyyyyyyyyyyy.

The cover sets the tone when it‘s described as being about the “girl who wrote Frankenstein” when in reality she was married with kids then, not a “girl” but a strong, intelligent woman.

But I‘m picky. 😂

SandyW These sound like legitimate reasons to pick!👎 7y

I‘ve been hanging on to this one from the library for ages but now they REALLY want it back so I guess I should oblige. Realized it is written in verse though so I can speed through it quickly today before I send it off!!

This is a fictionalized version of Mary Shelley, beginning before she wrote Frankenstein. I‘m a pretty harsh critic of these kinds of books, especially as Frankenstein is a favorite, but here we go!

Has anyone read this? From Goodreads: Mary Shelley, who as a teen girl fled her restrictive home only to find herself in the shadow of a brilliant but moody boyfriend. It is the story of the mastermind behind Dr. Frankenstein.

It's written in verse (which I usually like) I started it, it seemed OK but I had a hard time getting into it and I never finished it. Am I missing out?

I'm finally (almost) moved in to my new place and today I took my first new bookstagram picture to test the lighting. It was a bright sunny day, and I think things are going to work out nicely here ?.

Here is "Hideous Love" by Stephanie Hemphill which follow the story of the teenage girl who wrote Frankenstein. It's also written in verse, which is kind of interesting...
