9 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
For readers of Lilac Girls and The Lost Girls of Paris comes a captivating novel of resilience, as three generations of women battle to save their familys vineyard during WWII. Champagne, 1939 Gabrielle Leblanc Dupree is taking her familys future into her hands. While she should be preparing for a lavish party to celebrate two centuries of champagne making, she secretly hides Chateau Fouch-Leblancs most precious vintages behind a fake wall in the cellar in preparation for the looming war. But when she joins the resistance, the coveted champagne isnt the most dangerous secret her cellar must conceal A former Parisian socialite, Gabrielles mother, Hlne, lost her husband to another war. Now her home has been requisitioned by the Germans, who pillage vineyards to satisfy the Third Reichs thirst for the finest champagne. Theres even more at stake than Hlne dares admit. She has kept her heritage a secretand no one is safe in Nazi-occupied France. Josephine, the family matriarch, watches as her beloved vineyard faces its most difficult harvest yet. As her daughter-in-law and granddaughters contend with the enemies and unexpected allies in their midst, Josephines deep faith leads to her own path of resistance. Across years and continents, the Leblanc women will draw on their courage and wits, determined against all odds to preserve their lives, their freedom and their legacy

Cheers to a beautiful and unique piece of historical fiction! A story as fine as a good French wine, a story that sparkles like a good French Chsmpagne. Rich in history, four women, three generations. Strength that belies their femininity, grace under pressure, their desire to succeed, to overcome, to survive, to thrive, and to move forward, shows uncommon courage and strength. Cheers to a beautiful and unique story 🥂 #Cheersto3023

Today‘s Prompt: MATRIARCH

Josephine, the matriarch, was likable and tough, and I felt sorry for her because of her memory issues, but her diary is what helped protect her family since it told what she had seen and forgotten…https://tinyurl.com/2p95mnth

It‘s a good one…have YOU read it yet?

Mehso-so

I‘m between a pick & a so-so for this one that I finished this week for book tour. I love historical fiction, especially WWII with different POVs & this is about 3 generations of woman trying to save their vineyard & family from Nazi occupation in Champagne, France. The story is compelling but it was a bit too Christian for me-not that I‘m a heathen savage but I don‘t like to be hit over the head with religion.🤷🏻‍♀️ But that‘s me & others may ⬇️

DebinHawaii …really enjoy it. I paired it with Jacques Pepin‘s Cooked Grapes with Cream (really quite good! 😋) for my bookish dish. Link to my review & recipe: http://kahakaikitchen.blogspot.com/2021/07/the-book-tour-stops-here-review-of_31... (edited) 3y

I don't know why I always think these books will be different. No tears. No heartache. I have no idea why I always think things will be ok. I mean it's history. These things really happened. Though this is a work of fiction it is a part of history. It could have happened. Actually it did happen. It may have happened to a family very much like the one in this story. In France during WWII. All the laughter, tears, sadness.
5/5 stars
