The Damage
The Damage: A Novel | Caitlin Wahrer
When a small-town family is pushed to the brink, how far will they go to protect one of their own? An edgy, propulsive read about what we will do in the name of love and blood Tony has always looked out for his younger brother, Nick. So when he's called to a hospital bed where Nick is lying battered and bruised after a violent sexual assault, his protective instincts flare, and a white-hot rage begins to build. As a small-town New England lawyer, Tony's wife, Julia, has cases involving kids all the time. When Detective Rice gets assigned to this one, Julia feels they're in good hands. Especially because she senses that Rice, too, understands how things can quickly get complicated. Very complicated. After all, one moment Nick was having a drink with a handsome stranger; the next, he was at the center of an investigation threatening to tear not only him, but his entire family, apart. And now his attacker, out on bail, is disputing Nick's version of what happened. As Julia tries to help her brother-in-law, she sees Tony's desire for revenge, to fix things for Nick, getting out of control. Tony is starting to scare her. And before long, she finds herself asking: does she really know what her husband is capable of? Or of what she herself is? Exploring elements of doubt, tragedy, suspense, and justice, The Damage is an all-consuming read that marks the explosive debut of an extraordinary new writer.

I loved this book. It was so well written and kept me on the edge of my seat from the first page to the last. This is a family drama with a bit of a mystery and lots of twists. I loved all the characters. I thought the different perspectives worked perfectly in this book and I would recommend definitely. One of my top picks so far this year.

Audiobook win! This legal thriller meets detective novel depicts the harrowing rape of a male college student in Maine and the legal & social hurdles that follow. Then-a twist! Or 2! Just when I thought it was well written but predictable-the author upped her game. No wonder it is up for best debut novel awards! Trigger warnings: violent sexual assault, dating violence, homophobia. #mystery #4.5stars #twist #awardnominee

This novel hit all the right notes. Great writing, well developed characters, great plot. I couldn't put it down and caught myself thinking about it a lot.

4¼⭐ | NARRATION 😕=Should‘ve had more narrators
I‘m struggling with explaining why I docked a ½ star for this without giving any of the plot away...especially since it is everything that all these 5-star reviews say that it is. Because it is an amazing debut with great writing and the author handled the topic of male rape admirably. At the very end...I basically had a “wait, what was that”, moment. I even rewound it...and still🤷

A soft pick 3.5 A good crime mystery novel. This is surprisingly good for a debut. Twisty and turnt in a believable way. A bit over written - in the way that you read a sentence and think that could have been done without a few of those words. Overall good but took me longer to get through then it would with something 4+ stars engrossing.

This book completely sucked me in from the first chapter. The use of multiple perspectives and shorter chapters contributed to a really quick pace. A look at the aftermath of sexual assault on both the victim their inner circle. The relationship between brothers was really special and provided an opportunity to explore how far one would go to protect their family. Not many books give voice to male victims, so I'm glad to have read this one. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

FelinesAndFelonies I liked this one too. 3y

This book is so good. I just started it a day or two ago and don't want to put it down. TW for sexual assault and rape. A dark literary novel that covers a topic often underrepresented in fiction: sexual assault of men. Dark, fast-paced, and engrossing so far.

marleed I think this is an important book. I'm limited to 3 book recommendations for my 2022 IRL bookclub. This one is a strong contender because I think it would garner a discussion we've never broached. 3y

I was confused by this cover and what a woman had to do with the story of a 20-yr gay college male hooking up with an older guy who assaulted and raped him (TW). A third in, I realized the victim and the rapist are really supporting characters to a story about a loving family damaged by tragedy. Once I wrapped my head around the switch from what I was expecting, it was then, yeah, a solid mystery.

Well I was going to go with a light read for my mountains vacation, however, it‘s going to be dreary and rainy all weekend… Looks like I must read something a little heavier ☺️

The Damage it is !

(Good thing I packed two books 😉)

Mehso-so

We‘ve got some interesting players here, all well-developed and staying true to their characters. The story is a little icky, and I found myself just wanting to get to the end to see what really happened. A twist ending that I didn‘t see coming and was a bit of a stretch. Add this to the list of unmemorable books.

This slow-burning literary thriller is a June add-on for #BOTM. Framed around an informal interview between Detective Rice & Julia Hall, the two discuss the events of the fall/winter of 2015/6 when Julia‘s younger brother-in-law was the victim in a brutal assault & rape. Character-centric, the past chapters include not only Rice & Julia but the half-brothers, Tony and Nick. The plot may not surprise all but this is ripe with discussion topics!
