The Lights of Prague | Nicole Jarvis

For readers of VE Schwab and The Witcher, science and magic clash in atmospheric gaslight-era Prague. In the quiet streets of Prague all manner of otherworldly creatures lurk in the shadows. Unbeknownst to its citizens, their only hope against the tide of predators are the dauntless lamplighters - a secret elite of monster hunters whose light staves off the darkness each night. Domek Myska leads a life teeming with fraught encounters with the worst kind of evil: pijavica, bloodthirsty and soulless vampiric creatures. Despite this, Domek find solace in his moments spent in the company of his friend, the clever and beautiful Lady Ora Fischer - a widow with secrets of her own. When Domek finds himself stalked by the spirit of the White Lady - a ghost who haunts the baroque halls of Prague castle he stumbles across the sentient essence of a will-o-the-wisp captured in a mysterious container. Now, as it's bearer, Domek wields its power, but the wisp, known for leading travellers to their deaths, will not be so easily controlled. After discovering a conspiracy amongst the pijavice that could see them unleash terror on the daylight world, Domek finds himself in a race against those who aim to twist alchemical science for their own dangerous gain.

As with just about every Readathon, I read until I passed out (midway through Hour 20, this time), then woke up way too early and read some more. I couldn‘t resist starting THE LIGHTS OF PRAGUE last night even though I might not finish it before Gay May kicks off tomorrow. Hopefully the queer secondary character somebody on LibraryThing mentioned plays a large enough role to give me a loophole.

dabbe Does dat sweet Casey have a new haircut?!? 🤩🐾🤩 2y
xicanti @dabbe he‘s been rocking his spring cut for a few weeks now, but it‘s only just become warm enough that he can spread out with it instead of snuggling up inside a blanket nest! 2y

Vampires. Alchemy. A bit of magic. Old world charm. What's not to love about this book?

(Maybe a few questionable decisions by the main characters, but just a bit.)

⭐: 4.75

"Books without readers were only paper."

Been in a massive reading slump for weeks now. But finally, I found a book I don't want to put down. This book had me at the first page. Currently at 44 pages into it. ?

Bklover Yay! Glad it pulled you out of your slump! And it looks good too 😊 2y

I'm in two minds about this one. At times I really enjoyed it, it's a great concept and a different take on the vampire genre. But, Domek is a bit boring. A bit of a bland martyr type with not much else going on. He seems to have an interesting back story so could have been interesting. Ora also has a good story but both are only hinted at. It's a bit slow...And all of a sudden, stuff happened and it was over.

This was a great standalone fantasy novel. For a debut book, it was fun, well developed and had great pacing. I was looking for something distracting and engaging, which this totally was.

I loved the setting of Prague, which really came to life for me. I wanted more background on the vampires and other mythical creatures. I‘d be interested in a sequel that explores that more.

I really enjoyed this historical fiction fantasy set in 1868 Prague. The lamplighters do more than just light the lamps that illuminate the city, but also fight against what lurks in the darkness. Domek must figure out what is so special about the jar that accidentally comes to him and who he can trust with his secrets in a time when it appears that everyone is hungry for power. Loved this original take on one of my favorite monsters.

I read about this book a few weeks ago and just HAD to order it! I'm in love with the city of Prague, and this book features a story about vampires in 19th century Prague! 😍💕📚

Cortg I‘ve only been to Prague once but it‘s my favorite! 4y

Cortg I loved the architecture, the cool sculptures, we made a whole Shutterfly photo book of just doors, like elaborate wooden doors and hobbit doors and any kind of door you can imagine, weird, but awesome. So many people from different cultures and so many languages being spoken all around us. Tons of sightseeing. I want to go back! 4y
Branwen @Cortg It sounds amazing! 😍 4y
JenReadsAlot I love Prague so might check this one out! 4y

Cortg @Palimpsest When I went, it was under scaffolding being repaired but still awesome to see! We went in December and the Christmas market by the tower was so fun! 3y
