7 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
Captain Grayson Hunter knows the battle to complete the first worldwide telegraphic network will be fierce, and he intends to win it by any means necessary. When he hears about a reclusive genius who has figured out how to slash the cost of telegraphic transmissions, he vows to do whatever it takes to get the man in his employ. Except the reclusive genius is not a man, and she’s not looking for employment. Amelia Smith was taken in by English missionaries as a child. She’s not interested in Captain Hunter’s promises or his ambitions. But the harder he tries to convince her, the more she realizes that there is something she wants from him. She wants everything. And she’ll have to crack the frozen shell he’s made of his heart to get it.

Nothing in this world is perfect, but right now, in this moment, this book FEELS perfect to me. I SOBBED INTO MY BREAKFAST, THEN I CRIED MY WAY THROUGH SUNDOWN. It‘s got layers and layers and LAYERS of emotion, and there‘s a whole bunch of cool technological innovation, and the heroine has a dog because SHE WANTS A DOG and that‘s enough of a reason.

This might be my top read of 2022. I LOVE IT SO MUCH I CAN‘T STOP SWEARING AT IT. 5 STARS

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I love Courtney Milan!! I haven't read her in a while, I should pick up this one. 2y

Today‘s book & beer pairing. I‘m 25% into THE DEVIL COMES COURTING, and I‘m pretty sure I‘m obsessed with it. Courtney Milan writes slow, but damn, does she ever deliver the goods. There‘s so much packed in here. I can‘t wait to watch it all develop.

The beer‘s nice, too. I worried the honey would make it too sweet for my palate, but it mellows the aftertaste nicely while the tart blueberries have a stronger influence on the overall flavour.

It‘s amazing how light Milan was able to make this book feel considering how very much of it was about racism. I enjoyed the characters and the twist on actual telegraphic history. It did drag on a bit in the middle and I feel like Grayson was being a bit of an idiot—a point on which I‘m sure Amelia agrees with me!

I enjoyed this book but told one friend it was kind of like therapy. Grayson and Amelia appreciate each other so clearly and yet still have so much to learn about themselves and their place in this world. Amelia, because she's been raised by a missionary who has been encouraging her to stifle herself. And Grayson who is dealing with surviving a war not all his brothers did.

There is so much to think about here. So much. I only finished it this evening and I‘m going to have to think on it a bit. I really really liked it but I‘m struggling to find the words to talk about it. I‘m going to sleep on it.
