The extreme cold snap has finally broken (now -10 C rather than -40 C 🥶), so I set out with tagged book. I love how it feels like an edge of seat domestic thriller but with a supernatural angle. So good.
Ruby lives alone in her flat and sees a man across the way doing yoga and she is intrigued. She realizes that he can see her watching him and she meets him in the hallway. He invites her in where he introduces her to a woman, Constance, and a young child. Ruby doesn't understand why the woman and child live with the man, but she becomes friendly with Constance and begins to understand that things aren't as they seem.
An engaging and atmospheric mystery combined with great character development! I really enjoyed this. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I really had high hopes for this one, but I did not enjoy this nearly as much as Little Darlings. In fact, I almost gave up st 60%, but everyone's 4 and 5 star reviews made me push through. Even still... I would not give it 4 or 5 stars.

I liked this one a lot more than Little Darlings. This novel is based on the lore of selkies. A toddler is found abandoned outside a shop. The police are called & child services arrives too. Ruby appears just in time to rescue Leonie from being placed with social services. A few towns over, a man is found clinging to life, floating in a bathtub. Constance, Leonie's mother, is Missing. It's up to DS Harper to figure out how they're all related.⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Hidden kept my attention the whole book so I enjoyed reading it. I didn't like it as much as I loved her first book, Little Darlings, but it was still good. I look forward to future books from this author. The seamless way she incorporates myth and fairytale into the modern world is impressive. You never have to suspend reality to fully appreciate the story in either of her books.
Golding expertly mixes fantasy with a crime thriller in The Hidden. I could not stop listening and ended up doing so instead of doing my job. That's the sign of a good book! Recommended for fans of police procedurals, mystery/thrillers and Selkies.

Two years ago, I read and enjoyed Golding‘s debut novel that blended some horror with mystery. I was pleasantly surprised that this one also featured the detective Joanna Harper- but I am not sure I would qualify this as a sequel though Joanna does narrate part of this - along with Ruby, a young woman estranged from family and who becomes involved in her neighbor‘s family drama- one that blends crime & a dash of fantasy. Selkie lovers will enjoy!
I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 300.

Melanie Golding set the stage well in The Hidden. The first half proved magical, suspenseful, and intriguing. While some of the dialogue felt clunky, I was, overall, enjoying the story. My perspective began to crumble somewhere around the 50% mark.

🎧 Ruby, Constance, Joanna, Leonie, Sam & Gregor.
I loved this story!
The story begins in December-Present. Toddler Leonie is abandoned. Then you‘re taken back a year to another timeline when most of the above characters first meet.
The timelines ping pong back & forth closing the gap to explaining why Leonie was left on her own outside a small town store.
Ruby & Joanna have a very complicated family history.
