A Map to the Sun is a gripping YA graphic novel about five principle players in a struggling girls' basketball team. One summer day, Ren meets Luna at a beachside basketball court and a friendship is born. But when Luna moves to back to Oahu, Rens messages to her friend go unanswered. Years go by. Then Luna returns, hoping to rekindle their friendship. Ren is hesitant. She's dealing with a lot, including family troubles, dropping grades, and the newly formed women's basketball team at their high school. With Rens new friends and Luna all on the basketball team, the lines between their lives on and off the court begin to blur. During their first season, this diverse and endearing group of teens are challenged in ways that make them reevaluate just who and how they trust. Sloane Leongs evocative storytelling about the lives of these young women is an ode to the dynamic nature of friendship. *Lettering by Aditya Bidikar

Map to the sun is a book about a young girl and her life experiences and how it is to go through life through all sorts of ups and downs. The story tells of the girls home life living with parents who are constantly fighting and moving as well as what it feels like to lose people that are close to you. I think that this book is a good read if you enjoy something heartfelt but also something easy to read. I would give this book an 8.5/10

Cartoonist Sloane Leong has mixed ancestry—Hawaiian, Chinese, Mexican, Native American & European—& she draws on that variety in creating the 5 main teens in this wonderful graphic novel. The girls each have drama at home, plus the usual body issues & school drama, but when they form a basketball team, they find friendships, rivalries & self-respect. Larger gender & social justice issues add extra depth. Glorious artwork in vivid colours. #comics

An exceptionally beautiful graphic novel about a basketball team and a group of teens each facing their own unique struggles. Heavy at times but ultimately uplifting in its story of friendship. The color-shifting illustrations are unlike anything I've ever seen and so gorgeous.

TW: self harm, parent death, drug use, inappropriate student teacher relationship, attempted sexual assault
