The Black Coast: The God-King Chronicles, Book 1 | Mike Brooks
8 posts | 3 read | 9 to read
WAR DRAGONS. FEARSOME RAIDERS. A DAEMONIC WARLORD ON THE RISE. When the citizens of Black Keep see ships on the horizon, terror takes them because they know who is coming: for generations, the keep has been raided by the fearsome clanspeople of Tjakorsha. Saddling their war dragons, Black Keep's warriors rush to defend their home only to discover that the clanspeople have not come to pillage at all. Driven from their own land by a daemonic despot who prophesises the end of the world, the raiders come in search of a new home . . . Meanwhile the wider continent of Narida is lurching toward war. Black Keep is about to be caught in the crossfire - if only its new mismatched society can survive. THE START OF AN UNMISSABLE FANTASY SERIES.

This is an interesting, albeit maybe a little longer than it needs to be, fantasy about two peoples, enemies for a long lying, who must work together to survive and defeat a growing evil. The world building is fantastic and includes a really interesting understanding of gender, pronouns, and gender roles. On balance I enjoyed this one. It‘s the first in a duology and I‘m interested enough I‘ll likely read the second one at some point.

Sort of feel like I‘m teetering on the edge of a reading slump—and for no good reason because I‘ve read some great books recently—so I‘m trying to fight it off with the tagged book which grabbed my attention because of its super cool cover. Here‘s hoping it‘s awesome!

Librariana Hope you can fight back the slump! 3y

#WyrdAndWonder day 13 (belated): had me at hello

Technically, The Black Coast had me at ‘war dragons‘ but they are a helluva way to say hello. Delighted to say I enjoyed this even more than I expected to (which is saying something) - looking forward to The Splinter King later this summer.

It‘s the start of #wyrdandwonder and I have yet another TBR that I probably will deviate from entirely but ya know...joys of being a mood reader. These are catching my eye as well as Dungeons of Strata and The Lost War which are both on my kindle. We‘ll see how this month turns out...

imyril I really enjoyed The Black Coast - I hadn‘t realised it was such a chonk (I had an ebook and flew through it) 4y
RainyDayReading @imyrill It is a chonk! Only slightly intimidating haha. 4y

Reading High Fantasy always throws me back to my much younger years when I pretty much devoured only books in the genre- and I would have enjoyed this one then as much as I did now! With solid world-building and an expansive cast (which does sometimes slow the pacing down but the chapter headers help keep things straight), this makes for a great pageturner of a start to a new series! With raiders, knights, spirit-villains and dragons, this is fun!

You want to read this book.

A knife-throwing princess secretly running a patriarchy. Honourable young men caught between duty & pragmatism. A fierce warrior chief & her dragon-taming daughter trying to do a peace. Frigging DINOSAUR riders. Oh and god-kings, demon possession & street rats saving hidden heirs... as subplots.

I loved it - it both plays to and subverts epic fantasy tropes with glee.
