In the ancient land known as the Boundless World, the goddess Kirsha has been worshiped since time immemorial, and the two sentient races of the world-Humans and Garduna-each pay homage to her as their mother and guardian. Yet for a thousand years the land has been plagued by the scourge of the Awakened-horrific monsters risen inexplicably from the grave-and Kirsha, though still revered by the people, seems to have forgotten them in their greatest need. As the Awakened swell in number, tensions rise between the Human and Garduna realms, and the Boundless World stands on the brink of war. It is in the midst of this plight that a young knight named Eldric rises to prominence. An ardent foe of the Awakened and possessed of amazing prowess in battle, he paradoxically appears to harbor a strange empathy for the very monsters he fights against. It is not long before the people begin to identify him as the Revenant-a legendary figure said to hold the power to end the threat of the Awakened forever-even as his commanders grow concerned that he may be succumbing to corruption by evil. But Eldric believes he knows the truth, not only of what brought the Awakened to the world, but also of what caused the goddess herself to look away from it. Branded a heretic for his radical views, he sets off with two unlikely friends to discover the true origins of the curse of the Awakened, buried a thousand years in the past. But time is short, for the evil that created the curse in antiquity is beginning to stir again...
