Stone's Fall
Stone's Fall | Iain Pears
5 posts | 9 read | 16 to read
A tour de force in the tradition of Iain Pears international bestseller, An Instance of the Fingerpost, Stones Fall weaves a story of love and high finance into the fabric of a page-turning thriller. A novel to stand alongside Atonement and The Remains of the Day. A panoramic novel with a riveting mystery at its heart, Stones Fall is a quest, a love story, and a tale of murder richly satisfying and completely engaging on many levels. It centres on the career of a very wealthy financier and the mysterious circumstances of his death, cast against the backdrop of WWI and Europes first great age of espionage, the evolution of high-stakes international finance and the beginning of the twentieth centurys arms race. Stones Fall is a major return to the thriller form that first launched Iain Pears onto bestseller lists around the world and that earned him acclaim as a mesmerizing storyteller. From the Hardcover edition.

A very intriguing and unusual book. I loved the historical fiction aspects and the three separate stories that each unravelled a little more of the mystery. It took some commitment to read as it is dense and involved (in a good way!) and wonderfully well written. Some nice surprises and twists along the way!

A murder mystery told backwards. London 1909 to Paris 1890 then Venice 1867. Well written, intriguing story. Great book.

Help!! I can't take all these books on vacation with me...so which one do I pick?? 🤔🤔🤔 @Laalaleighh .... I blame you for this conundrum 😋 How dare you send me three fabulous choices!

BooksForEmpathy Secret History!! 8y
Bookworm83 @BooksForEmpathy Thanks for the vote! Btw, in addition to whichever one of these books I take, I'm also taking 8y
Caterina The Secret History would be a perfect vacation read! 8y

Laalaleighh Hahaha I'm squealing in delight over this picture!!! Ok. If you feel like reading something a little dark (like human nature dark) and set in an ivy-ish setting where the major crux is figuring out the characters and what makes them tick, with really gorgeous prose- then The Secret History. If you're feeling a little fantasy, whimsical, sci-fi, multiple story lines/POV, craziness- then Arcadia. 👇🏼 8y
Laalaleighh If you're more in a legit mystery, historical fiction, slow burn, slowly put the pieces together puzzle- then stones fall. 8y
tpixie @Laalaleighh ooh good hard choices!! I was going to say the one that weighs the least! Lol 😆 8y
Laalaleighh The secret history starts with a murder and you spend the rest of the book trying to figure out why. Stones fall starts with one of the wealthiest men in Europe walking out the window of their office and falling to their death, and you spend the rest of the book trying to figure out why. Hahahaha. Sensing a pattern. 8y
Laalaleighh @tpixie I'm dying to find out what she thinks of them haha 8y
JanuarieTimewalker13 I'd take the lightest one, as far as weight is concerned. 8y
Bookworm83 @Laalaleighh @Caterina @tpixie @JanuarieTimewalker13 I'm in the mood for them all...hence the problem 😂😂 The Secret History sounds amazing (and it's the lightest 👍🏻) so I think it's coming with me. The other two will be up next on the TBR when I return! Thanks all! (edited) 8y
tpixie @Laalaleighh sound great! 8y
tpixie @Bookworm83 they all sound so good! You won't go wrong! 8y

Bookworm83 @mauveandrosysky @Redwritinghood @BeckyMerilatt @KarenUK @Reviewsbylola Thank you! Secret History is the lucky book that will travel to Vegas with me. I've been assured it's infinitely better than The Goldfinch (which I didn't finish 😋), so I'm finally going to see what all the fuss is about! 8y
Bookworm83 @jfalkens I know, right? I need a bigger suitcase! 8y
jfalkens @Bookworm83 or a bag just for books 😀 that's what I do ☺ 8y
