Marilia, the Warlord
Marilia, the Warlord | Morgan Cole
1 post | 1 read
Born the bastard daughter of a painted lady, Marilia was told she would live out her days within the walls of her mother's brothel, a companion for the rich men of Tyrace. But after a terrible loss and a shocking act of betrayal, Marilia's world turns upside down. With the help of her twin brother, Annuweth, she flees the only home she's ever known in search of the one man who can offer her a chance at a better life-the friend of her deceased father, the commander of the Emperor of Navessea's finest knights. What follows is a journey spanning years, from the streets of the desert city of Tyracium to the splendor of the emperor's keep and the wind-swept, wild island of Svartennos. Along the way, Marilia discovers her true passion, a gift inherited from her father: an uncanny knack for the games of war and strategy that Navessean noble-men play, but which are forbidden to women like her. When the empire is threatened by a foreign invasion, the defense of Navessea is left in the hands of a cruel and arrogant general no match for their enemy. With the fate of her new home and her family hanging in the balance, Marilia swears to use all her courage and cunning to do whatever she can to help repel the invasion--if she can convince anyone to follow her.The struggle that follows will test her to her core and lead her back to the past she thought she had escaped. Facing treachery within her own ranks as well as a devious enemy commander, Marilia will need all the help she can get--even if it means turning to the one person she hoped not to ever need again: her estranged twin brother. Inspired by The Song of Achilles and Ender's Game, Marilia, the Warlord is a blend of the epic and the personal, a story of romance, envy, the rivalry between brother and sister, and one woman's painful discovery that her childhood dreams weren't quite what she imagined.

Pickpick

I like a story that draws you in to both action and emotion, and this one does a great job with that. Marilia moves along at a good pace, keeping your attention and engaging your emotions, giving you something to sink your teeth into.

An action packed fantasy with a strong female main character.

This was an ARC I received for a review.

The picture is just one of me at my spinning wheel at the fair, just because.

Nute I like everything about this post! 4y
kimdegener @Nute hehe, thanks. I usually do demonstrations and school programs with fiber arts, and with Covid, it's a no go. I miss it. 4y
Kimzey Woo hoo! Fiber arts! 🧶 4y

kimdegener @Kimzey you a yarn person? 4y
Kimzey No, but I‘m a folklorist and manage a folk and traditional arts program, so I know a few spinners, weavers, knitters, crocheters, and quilters. 😊 4y
kimdegener @Kimzey now, THAT'S cool. I knit, spin, and dabble in weaving. I want to learn tapestry. 4y
Nute What a cool conversation thread between you and @Kimzey 🙂 I enjoying crocheting. I wish that i knew how to do other fiber activities...I would love to know how to spin, weave and quilt. That is why I am so happy to read the conversation between the two of you.😊 4y
kimdegener @Nute you'd be surprised what you can learn from YouTube or a book. If you want to try spinning, start with a spindle and fiber from Etsy. If you want to weave, make a loom. Start cheap, see what you like, and grow from that! 4y
Nute Awesome encouragement and advice! 4y
