This book received the Woodson award. It conveys 3 stories of black heroes in the Wild West. It‘s unique because it tell the story as a graphic novel. It is a cool way to teach people about history and uses real pictures as well as comic pictures.

I just loved all of the illustrations within the comics so I kept looking through each one

This book was published in 2020 and has won the Woodson Award. It is set up like a comic strip so might be confused for younger children but I thought it told a really good story.

“As a former slave, Mary never knew her exact birthday. She was so loved in Cascade that the school would close and the town would celebrate whatever dates she‘d come up with, once or twice a year.”

The book itself was not very word heavy because it was set up like a comic strip. The pictures helped to tell the story which was very entertaining and made it easy to follow along. I enjoyed the illustrations, they were simple but added a lot to the story line.

This is a non fiction book that is set up in a comic strip style. It delivers a lot of information on people as well as dates and events and goes in a chronological order. It is easy to read because it is not just paragraphs on end, the comic style speech bubbles make it entertaining to read. Each chapter focuses on a different person; Mary Fields, Bass Reeves, and Bob Lemmons. It has resources and timelines at the end of the book too.
