Secrets of the Greek Revival (Mystery House #1: San Antonio)
Secrets of the Greek Revival (Mystery House #1: San Antonio) | Eva Pohler
6 posts | 5 read | 6 to read
Ellen and her two best friends share a mid-life crisis by hatching a plan to renovate an 1860's Greek revival in the nearby historic district of San Antonio. Although Ellen isnt one to believe in ghosts, she comes face to face with something inexplicable in the attic. Her ghost-enthusiast friends convince her that they must help the spirit find closure, and as they dig deeper into the past, they uncover a shocking history that someone in the neighborhood doesnt want exposed. But Ellen and her friends don't give up easily. They realize they've been called to give voice to the invisible women who suffered behind the walls of the house for decades.

Bailedbailed

On second thought, I completely hate this already 😆 time to bail! I really don't like the writing style or characters. There's lots of exposition, awkward sentences, and the womens' habit of jumping to wild conclusions is just extremely irritating already.

"Ellen, being in the middle of her two friends in size, color, and politics, was usually the odd woman out..."

This one is a Hoopla Bonus Borrow this month, and so far I'm not sure about the writing style.

2 - 2.5 ⭐️ April #doublespin

The story felt clunky and jumpy at times, and let certain subplots floating (ghostlike) in the background, perhaps they‘re addressed further later in the series, but I won‘t be reading to find out. It had the makings of a “pick” in terms of plot, but fell short for me. The tidy ending came abruptly. I got to The End and was surprised as I‘d expected a bit more finale.

Pickpick

Did not realize this was a cozy when I chose it. I thought it was going to be a spooky book. For a cozy, it was pretty good!

Pickpick

Ellen, Sue and Tanya are three middle aged women who are growing bored with their lives. They decided to purchase an old house and rehab it. It turns out the house they are interested in has a reputation for being haunted, and also a possible treasure hidden somewhere on the property.

I was a little disappointed when we learn who Amy is. It seemed a bit far fetched. Overall the story was interesting, and I will give this author another try.
