Bringing Back the Beaver
Bringing Back the Beaver: The Story of One Man's Quest to Rewild Britain's Waterways | Derek Gow
2 posts | 1 read | 9 to read
A bold new voice in nature writing, from the front lines of Britain's rewilding movement Bringing Back the Beaver is farmer-turned-ecologist Derek Gows inspirational and often riotously funny firsthand account of how the movement to rewild the British landscape with beavers has become the single most dramatic and subversive nature conservation act of the modern era. Since the early 1990s in the face of outright opposition from government, landowning elites and even some conservation professionals Gow has imported, quarantined and assisted the reestablishment of beavers in waterways across England and Scotland. In addition to detailing the ups and downs of rewilding beavers, Bringing Back the Beaver makes a passionate case as to why the return of one of natures great problem solvers will be critical as part of a sustainable fix for flooding and future drought, whilst ensuring the creation of essential lifescapes that enable the broadest possible spectrum of Britains wildlife to thrive.

Sometimes I have this Post 10 channel in the background because of the calming water sounds. Because he has a video of a flooded lot because of beavers, this video of a rescue beaver popped up in my feed. The beaver was orphaned and taken in by this woman who named him Justin Beaver (Lololol sooo cute!!!) Later that day I was listening to The For Real Podcast and they talked about a book about reintroducing beavers into an ecosystem. I 👇🏼

Reggie wondered if this was the bookish higher powers talking to me. Turns out, yes. Lol The book was good. (edited) 4y

candority I dreamt that a beaver was building a dam under my house last night?! Maybe the same bookish higher powers are whispering in my ear too. 4y
SamAnne There's another great book on the history and evolution of beavers and how they are being re-intraduced called Eager by Ben Goldfarb. I work on river restoration issues and I learned so much. And readly great science writing with a bit of humor here and there. 4y
Reggie @JennyM Thanks! 😊 4y
Reggie @Tanisha_A Thanks! And he‘s adorable. He‘s gnawed all her walls and baseboards. And he keeps gathering stuff in her house to build shelter. 4y
Reggie @Candority Maybe? I also forgot to say that in kindergarten our mascot was the beaver. We were the eager beavers and our principal went around the first month teaching us how to draw a beaver. 4y
Reggie @SamAnne I might give it a try. Thanks! It was nice to read about how they can prevent flooding and create ecosystems that provide home to so many species of not only other animals and insects but also plant life. . So much is connected. 4y
vivastory Justin Beaver 😂😂 4y
Reggie @vivastory I did not know this, I really thought they ate fish, but beavers are vegetarians. 4y
Bookzombie I also didn‘t know beavers are vegetarians. (edited) 4y
Reggie @Bookzombie Thanks, Margie! Aside from their pelts, they were also wanted for their glands which because of eating willow bark which contains salicin which is converted into salicylic acid (aspirin) once consumed, the glands were used in medicine. 4y
Centique I‘m going to put this on my TBR for next year (I‘m doing a “nature and outdoors” reading challenge) I‘ve always thought beavers were cool since I saw a doco of them swimming through flooded waterways through trees - and awesome builders too! And Justin Beaver is brilliant 😂😍 4y
Reggie @Centique Lol, Justin Beaver is too cute. P.s. I‘m only halfway through Mama Day and I don‘t want it to end. I‘m enjoying her as a character and the he said/she said, George and Cocoa part is brilliant. 4y
Centique @Reggie I‘m so glad. I‘m looking forward to your review so much! 💕 4y

Derek Gow is from UK and this is the story of the comeback of the beaver there. The writing is lovely, there are funny, snarky moments, and there are moments of passion about doing right by our planet. He goes into the history of the beaver. How they became endangered by the pelt trade and how they were basically extinct from the UK for over 100 years. What was most frustrating was the bureaucracy the beaver restoration movement runs into he 👇🏼

Reggie describes as politicians making the best financially sound decisions for a few vs. what is best for the many and the land. Sounds familiar. Anyways, this was short but great. 4y
Bookzombie This is a great review. Sadly, the politics do sound familiar. 4y
