Remember Me: A Spanish Civil War Novel | Mario Escobar
4 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
Amid the shadows of war, one family faces an impossible choice that will change their lives forever. Madrid, 1934. Though the Spanish Civil War has not yet begun, the streets of Madrid have become dangerous for thirteen-year-old Marco Alcalde and his younger sisters, Isabel and Ana. When Marcos parents align themselves against General Franco and his fascist regime, they have no inkling that their ideals will endanger them and everyone they lovenor do they predict the violence that is to come. When the Mexican government promises protection to the imperiled children of Spain, the Alcaldes do what they believe is best: send their children, unaccompanied, across the ocean to the city of Moreliaa place theyve never seen or imagined. Marco promises to look after his sisters in Mexico until their family can be reunited in Spain, but what ensues is a harrowing journey and a series of heartbreaking events. As the growing children work to care for themselves and each other, they feel their sense of home, family, and identity slipping further and further away. And as their memories of Spain fade and the news from abroad grows more grim, they begin to wonder if they will ever see their parents again or the glittering streets of the home they once loved. Based upon the true stories of the Children of Morelia, Mario Escobars Remember Menow available for the first time in Englishexplores the agony of war and paints a poignant portrait of one familys sacrificial love and endurance.

This was a heartbreaking story of a young boy and his siblings on how they tried to survive without their parents during the Spanish Civil War. Though this is a fictional story, the author stated that it was inspired by true accounts. We learn about the children of Spain, the war in Spain, how Mexico got involved, and what happened after the war. Very sad stuff.

Last night, my husband and I celebrated our first date anniversary at this awesome Spanish restaurant called Cafe Sevilla. We did their Journey through Spain menu. We tried different tapas, had sangria, had paella, and dessert. It was all yummy!

I am still reading my book for Spain. Fingers cross that I finish it this weekend.

Presentation of a portion of history I knew little about & found quite interesting. Decent writing & a comfortably paced narrative with a lot of historical information. The characters were likable & the plight of the family was well-documented, but I had difficulty becoming emotionally invested or connected to the plot. I simply found myself underwhelmed. This was not a bad read by any means & certainly has merit, just not as powerful as I wanted.

Should I get the English or Spanish version I CANT DECIDE 😆😆😆

Updated: I ended up buying the English one. I figured I might not know Spanish enough to read an adult novel yet
