Wonderland | Jennifer Hillier
Top of the line thriller writingYou better call in sick, because youre not going anywhere until you finish reading it. Oh, and you might want to lock the door, too. Just to be safe. #1 bestselling author Jeffery Deaver Fans of Chelsea Cain and Lisa Gardner will devour this edgy thriller about the gruesome secrets hidden beneath a small-town amusement park. From the author of Creep, Freak, and The Butcher, Jennifer Hilliers fine knack for creating hideous killers (Booklist) is vividly on display. Welcome to Wonderland. By day, its a magical place boasting a certain retro charm. Excited children, hands sticky with cotton candy, run frenetically from the Giant Octopus ride to the Spinning Sombrero, while the tinkling carnival music of the giant Wonder Wheelthe oldest Ferris wheel in the Pacific Northwestfills the air. But before daybreak, an eerie feeling descends. Maybe its the Clown Museum, home to creepy wax replicas of movie stars and a massive collection of antique porcelain dolls. Or maybe its the terrifyingly real House of Horrors. Ormaybe its the dead, decaying body left in the midway for all the Wonder Workers to see. Vanessa Castros first day as deputy police chief of Seaside, Washington, is off to a bang. The unidentifiable homeless man rotting inside the tiny towns main tourist attraction is strange enough, but now a teenage employeewhose defiant picture at the top of the Wonder Wheel went viral that same morningis missing. As the clues in those seemingly disparate crimes lead her down a mysterious shared path of missing persons that goes back decades, she suspects the seedy rumors surrounding the amusement parks dark history might just be true. She moved to Seaside to escape her own scandalous past, but has she brought her family to the center of an insidious killers twisted game? Acclaimed author Jennifer Hilliers bone-chilling thriller is masterful and fast-paced, hurtling toward a shocking, bloody conclusion.

I am a sucker for books about amusement parks, so of course I had to read this as soon as I saw it. This has a good mystery to it. Young Wonderland employees are going missing. And there's a new Deputy Police Chief on the case. I was surprised by how many people in the book have actually killed another person and got away with it for years. I did enjoy this book and was surprised when the killer of the boys was exposed.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Another Hillier read for the week. What can I say? She flows. Gritty and dark, as usual. Touch of ick, to be expected. This is my 3rd book by this author and I can tell she will be a go-to!

Despite her books being hit or miss for me...this one wasn‘t too bad, not at all, actually…although I was slightly miffed with how it ended. The narration by Eunice Wong definitely stepped it up a notch. While it had some creepy moments, I wouldn‘t really classify this as horror…it was definitely more of a murder/missing persons mystery thriller.

I loved this book! Jennifer Hillier is one of my favorite authors. This is one of her earlier books and she hit this one out of the park. I was truly surprised when the killer was revealed. It was well written and the storyline flowed perfectly. I highly recommend this book.

“An atmospheric and edgy thriller that combines Heartsick with Please See Us, this novel from the author of the ‘truly frightening‘ (Suspense Magazine) Creep follows a police officer investigating a string of disappearances at a mysterious amusement park.”

I love Hillier‘s books and this twisty mystery set against the backdrop of an amusement park is really a riveting listen! Vanessa Castro is new to Seaside, WA and her first day as deputy police chief starts off with a grisly corpse. Soon it‘s clear that there may be more bodies to uncover & that the wholesome park may hav things scarier than its clown museum within its grounds. A great audio performance & a surprising plot make this a fast listen!

I loved this book! This book sucked me in until the very end. I loved the amusement park vibes. I loved the story, I loved the ending. Everything about this book was just great! The sex scenes were a little much but quickly passed. I also thought this would make a great criminal minds episode, then criminal minds was mentioned a few times! Made me giggle, 5/5!

I read this in less than 24 hours as I was compelled to continue reading it until the very end. A decaying corpse found in the grounds of Wonderland sets off an investigation into who this victim is and how many more victims Wonderland may be hiding. From the creepy clown museum to the complex relationships between senior management of Wonderland and some of the more junior staff, I was here for everything and every moment of this book. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

What initially drew me to this book was the cover. I hate clowns & wanted something scary for a Halloween read. I think this book got the creepiest 100-pages from the end. The atmosphere of the Clown Museum was definitely scary. I swear I could hear the tunnels dripping. 🙈 Now that I read this one, I am on the hunt for Creep and Freak. Not the scariest book I've read. But disturbing. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I picked this one up based on a list of what I thought were horror/supernatural books, but it's actually a thriller. There are a few cliches and a few instances of pretty egregious editing misses (including a full page where "died" was used instead of "disappeared"), and that always turns me off, but it's a fun enough read for those who like police procedurals.

ImperfectCJ @Harley_Quinn Nice first lines! I'm a multiple-book-reader myself (I'm actually not sure how many I have going right now) and usually just pick one of them for a #FirstLineFriday. It would be cool to be able to tag more than one. 4y

ImperfectCJ @Harley_Quinn My kids do a book-based curriculum for homeschool and I try to keep up with all of their reading as well as my own. I think I have two books of my own going and then 10 or so between the two kids. I am always behind. 4y

Started my Halloween decorating with a trip to the library to give my written TBR physical form. I could probably add some pumpkins or spiders, but that might be gilding the lily.
